After a tough year last year with getting my tonsils out, a new baby on the scene and dealing with my Dads cancer, I gave all racing a miss for the year, still kept reasonably fit though. January was time to plan some racing and adventures but Sundays spin put an end to that. Had a silly off at the Biking.ie charity spin in Ballinastoe, managed to mess up my ankle, though I just tore the ligament, although the pain was bad I managed to cycle home with one leg.
Once home and with the leg up the pain eased a bit, very swollen as expected, but I couldn't bear much weight on it so decided to pop up to vhi swift care for peace of mind, didn't get that! Was told I had two bad fractures, one on the fibula and one on the tallus, referred me the St. Vincent and yesterday I had them screw together, luckily nothing was displaced so easy for the surgeon to repair.
Plenty of medication and pain for a bit, 6 weeks off the leg and then rehab. Anyone any stories of breaks and rehab? Obviously being self employed getting back to work as soon as possible is the goal and that cycling and getting muscles and fitness will take some time. I'm high on opioids at the moment so hope that made sence!
Sorry to hear that Stevo, your luck has to get better soon!
Regarding rehab and recovery I’d listen to your dr and physio but also your own body will let you know how much you can push it.
In saying that if it takes an extra week or two to get back and heal better it’s worth it in the long run.
Get well soon.
get well soon Steveo! rest up and let the medicine do its job (just don't go online shopping at Tesco you'll buy nothing but condiments and soap and wonder what the hell you're going to eat . . .?)
Pretty impressive injury! My friend came off her motorbike at 100km/h (on a track) and fractured her talus. Got back to mountain biking and running quick enough and hasn't had any issues.
Get a good physio, rehab for my knee surgery was more suited to someone sedentary and I had to find someone else to get me back on the bike. Walking in a swimming pool really helped to build strength in the early stages following surgery and after a pelvic fracture. You might look a bit odd to everyone else but found it worthwhile.
For your head; find a new hobby to fend off cabin fever. Best of luck with your recovery.
Sorry to hear that Stevo. Different recovery for everyone so be patient and let the healing process do its job.
One of my kitesurf buddies broke his leg in October and heâs still in cast at 30. And another mate did his 8 weeks ago at 63 and heâs back walking so impossible to say
a chance to learn new skills like how to carry mug of tea and sambos back to couch while on crouches ……..baby anti spill beaker works well...…
as said cabin fever is hard have had a couple of sessions over time never easy ....spend your time do streching exercise, visualizing pass spins while lieing on floor, if your getting it right your heart beat will go up at the hard/freighting bits

Christ on a bike....the boredom....two weeks since I fecked up my ankle, 10 days post op, a lot of pain to deal with but it's easing now, tough coming down off the strong drugs which I wasn't expecting, sickness, headaches etc. Stitches are coming out on Friday plus an x-ray to check that's it's healing ok. Basically stuck with my leg elevated 90% of the time since the op, prob another 5 days of this and then maybe I'll be a bit more active and get a knee walker. Thank God for Netflix!
