Myself and Alfie took part in the first part of the Mountainbike Leader award in Kippure house with Tarja Owens. we thought we'd do it as we felt the Club, especially the newer members and the less competent ones would benefit from having qualified guides.
After day 1, I have to say how impressed I am with Tarja and the structure of the course.
I've learned an amazing amount about teaching techniques and methods.
I'm looking forward to helping interested members getting the most out of their spins.
The one thing it has taught me is that we are going to have to seriously look at the standards and guidelines we require for Spin Leaders. The content of the Course and the sheer amount of work that went in to what we had to do and explain is staggering, fair play to everybody who participated.
We do our assessment in another month but i would highly recommend anybody interested in leading club spins that they let us know and we'll get you on to the Course next time around.
We as a club take on huge responsibility taking people on spins and looking after them.
As a Club we have a duty of care to the members and a responsibility to look after them.
Especially now with the increase in new members with limited experience.
We will be setting out guidelines for spin leaders in the future , everybody who leads spins at the moment are all highly competent individuals, but up until this weekend I didn't realise how much else we need to be doing, more competence in first aid, leadership and navigation is not going to do any harm or impact negatively on the spins.
We do our events at the highest standards, all our racers are racing at a high standard, they all know exactly what they are doing and how to do it.
Theres no reason to approach the spins with a lesser attitude.
We'll be coaching the spin leaders on what we think they need to be doing, it will be good for them as individuals and it'll be good for the club overall.
Now, I am involved with the development of the Irish Mountainbike leader award and by next year i will be able to train up leaders. If you are interested let me know.
