it would be great to see anybody who has never raced DH having a go at this. You might like it..you might hate it. But you will never know till you try it.
one of the best XC racing seasons I had in recent years was when I was training hard to be a DHer.
I had a great year, it was me and Karl Young ( Bananaman) , he's win one, I'd win one. But it was great craic.We travelled everywhere to the races. I remember one Coolaveely, me, Damo Duggan, Sean, Bruce, Stewart and I think Gmac was there too we were all on the same Minute at the end..,Good times and great craic.
Training with Gerry, Damo and the Wolfes every Thursday on a stretch of Dh about 20feet long..
And building jumps all over the place just for the craic.
Racing in Cloon in the rain with no sleeves and crashing on the finish line.

Just because I don't do it anymore doesn't mean I don't love it..

I remember that season DH, byrne....
The craic was deadly. It was the year before it became 2 day events.
Some close battles, and savage abuse. I have some photos and vid clips of us all. I'll take them from my other computer and stick them up.
I finished 4th or 5th overall in masters too...
have you got that one from Beneavin..where I made you do the **** Jump near the end !!! Holy mother of god..we did some really stupid things when I was in my mid 40's !!!! I've 2 years to go till I'm a Supervet !!
That was funny. I had decided that I definitely wasn't doing the jump, as I had a huge work commitment on the monday, and the risk was too high. I praciced all day without it, and had the chicken run nailed. but on my run all I heard was "BENDER" as I approached. I actually thought I wouldn't make it, but went at it anyway. I didn't care if I broke myself up...I was pleasently surprised when I made it. It was a stupid jump.... landing straight into a pile of rocks. no line whatsoever. just rocks. and yes, I think I have it....
oh yeah and have that other eejit Bren mocking me..not a chance..i quit at the top of my game !
Me mock ? I'm going to get my arse handed to me on a plate all season by Ian Mac and probably Bananna man now that he's on a bike from the current decade.
Weather your first or last you cant beat the buz of the starter beeps and the minute or so of kaos that follows.
Has to be tried at least once.
I just remember carpet..an off camber ( warped) couple of planks with a strip of carpet..in a forest on the edge of civilization and a brutal landing 6' down on a big pile of rocks..
and a slight uphill pedal to the finish..
and the mad jump on to the flat fireroad..we were walking up the track and I saw Dale and Michael do it and thinking, " them lads are deadly"
And i got about half way up the track and and I sez to sean " **** it"..turned around and did the same jump !!
Him and Bruce knew i was alright cause they could hear me shouting down the track !!
Watever happened to that crazy guy who had a go at everything!!
