On one hand, they are expensive, done without one to date, chances of you ever needing it are low enough, but now that they are available I am kind of thinking I ought to get one. I have been witness to lots of bad accidents and had a few of the 'can't feel me legs' moments myself when I was younger. When I am racing I wear a full face and all the pads, they will only protect you from relativly minor injuries compared to snapping your neck. It can happen to anyone and I certainly wouldn't like to spend the rest of my days eating through a straw, becuase I was worried about looking like a gimp or didn't fancy spending the price of a pair of wheels to save me neck.
while they offer great protection i feel that most of the people that have them, have bought them because there the cool thing to buy to go with your troy lee kit with safety been used as an excuse for them to buy the next bit of bling
That may well be the case. I don't think they look cool at all, and they certainly won't go with my kit, without taking a scissors to it. From what I understand it doesnât really fit with most brands of armour. And if it will work with the armour, you have to cut up your jersey cause it has to go under the back plate of the armour? I am sure some of the main manufacturers will start incorporating them into suits at some stage.
what about them fellas? there aot cheaper but don't know if they'd work well with a mounainbike helmet as there for motocross. peter popham wears one but he has a mx lid. i'm sure they'd do some of the work.
the leatts are good but I'd put the money towards a race in the u.k. or parts for my bike before I bought one.
i have also heard they can make it easier to break your collarbone as all the pressure goes to it, I'd rather break my collarbone than my neck though.
I agree with Sean. They certinally are not a fashion statement and I will try and wear one myself next season. This old neck of mine needs all the protection I can give it. I put a post up the other day in Irishdh site on Neck Braces and the whole article is worth reading to understand both the dangers and the advantages of wearing the brace. One can easily recover from most broken bones but the neck will really put you on the straw.

no i don't think they're a fashion statement either..they make a lot of sense..i seen similiar years and years ago at an mx race in Spain..they were laughed at..ugly looking yokes but without a doubt effective..i've seen my far share of neck accidents including that poor guy on 3 rock that time..
they're savagely overpriced though...which is bad juju..all you need is something to stop your neck being over extended backwards..
i'm nearly sure i saw something similiar built into a suit of kendo armour too..
i've seen a lot things i have!!
Hey you don't need one Sean, you must have been punched in the head enough times out in Coolock to build up a neck like a tree trunk..
ccm are good mates of mine, so Gav there will look after you if you want one. VMX in Arklow also sells them.
I'm sure I can get you a loan of both, if you want to try them Sean...
to some people they could be a fashion statement though, thinking they make them look more like a factory rider and what not.
yeah ccm are good, i got my gear off them a while back.
norman watts up north does them aswell and if you mention ewan doherty's name you get a 10% discount, or something like that. they're meant to be good with delivery aswell.
i could name more than one rider who definitly wears one becuase they think its cool. Personally i think they are way to expensive even though we can get them through the shop and i wouldn't have to apy full price. Even at trade price there still well over priced. They do offer way more spinal protection than anything else all the likes of a 661 pressure suit does is stop you getting a few cuts and bruises there not gonna stop you breaking anything. I can really see them being a fad and this years must have at the dh races. Full armour was like that a while back now most ride in just knee pads and a full face.
I dunno if they work 100%, but you hear a lot of stories of people in accidents saying the leatt saved them. I think nothing is too expensive for your spine. Having already had a spinal injury, I bought one but I couldnt wear it I tried everything to get it to work, but it forced me to look downwards. I think cos its because I am tall and I usually ride a bit scrunched up. I couldnt put my head in the position I wanted it was like somebody pushing my head down.
I think they would work perfectly for motocross as your body is more perpendicular to the ground and more upright.
I think if anyone can wear one they should, I dont really think they look cool, bit robotic or somehting but its better than ending up like one.
.As for spinal body armour/pressure suit, when I was in france a guy staying there was a guide and brought some guy out, the guy he brought out, crashed hard when he stood up he fainted and fell backwards and a rock smashed one of his vertebrae....., I nearly always wear a spinal guard. Anyone who has ever had a heavy over the bars experience just has to think, if, the same thing happend and they landed on a rock. The outcome would be possibly a smashed spine. Its possible just depends on the terrain. There's not much protection or fat on a spine when your full weight is rolling on it.
I dont think they look cool at all, I do think Sam Hill is pretty cool (or super confident) having as his only protection, his helmet and kneepads , not even shins, but he is Sam Hill.....
....but for myslef, still even though i like like a crappy robocop, I know I have taken every protection I can and makes me feel better.
thats the funny thing about body armour..I have pads and a full dainese body suit thing..I've had loads of crashes..I know it makes sense to wear them but I hate even wearing a fullface helmet !!..i find the whole armour suit extremely uncomfortable and I get possibly a bit Claustrophobic with the full face..
I like the 661 kneepads..I don't notice them and they seem to support my dodgy right knee, dodgy from 20 years of soccer, mind you..
do people think that wearing whole armour makes you faster..?
that doesn't work for me at all..
I have to agree with people who think those leatt braces are expensive..they are a shocking price for something thats being billed as a safety item..
and they definitely, definitely don't look cool..
but people should wear whatever they feel they need regardless of whether its cool or not..
here's my t'pence worth.... a nasty crash can happen at any time riding downhill, not just at races... so, what you gonna do on a regular sat or sun spin, cyle uphill with one on, ... or stop at the top of every dh run and put it on... so unless you wear them every time you ride dh, it doesn't make sense buying one... i sorta think, you have to ride within your abilities.... there's no guarantees.... not even with one of those braces on
oh no Mr Incarcerated..you have broken the golden rule of EPIC..
everybody is encouraged to ride outside their limits in EPIC or at least on their limit all the time.
Wheres the fun in staying within your abilities..?
We do however shout " Danger " if it gets tricky..
