Embarrassing personal problem .... some advice needed!

I don't know how to say this ...... but I've worn out the Granny ring on my training bike! Every time I shift into it I get mad chain suck, tried replacing the chain but it's definately the chain ring!
The general consensus on the spin today was that I couldn't possibly go into Alfie's and ask for a new granny ring (better to look for tablets for erectile dysfunction!). Some suggestions were - go 2x10, buy a new crankset, change the whole bike! What do people think?
Interesting thing is that I managed all day without it, including climbing up Maulin - once again Alfie and Richie were right!!
In fairness to ya Richard you hauled up Maulin no bother. Ya don't need it.

(mind you I thought there was a heavy breather on my shoulder at one stage!)

My advice, 2X10 Richard, with an 11-36 on the rear. When the cranks on my winter bike give up the whole drive train will be replaced with a 2x10. Have it on the hardtail and love it, nice clean chainlines all the time.

Of course you're right Damo - definately going 2x10 on the race bike for next year but means changing shifters, rear dérailleur, chain and cassette as well as the crank! Just at the moment .....! Probably just put a new granny and middle chain ring on and worry about it in the New Year!
2X10 11-36 sounds ideal.

I have 3X10 11-36 which means the your aways in the right gear and never have to use the granny ring, and a 2X9 (really double and bash) 11-43 which in which the granny gets plenty of action.

But most of all I'm impressed you got up Maulin with no granny, up the grim side? Cool.

Hil fu ckin arious , almost as funny as me being too chicken to ride the Tree of Shame with my betters..I'm off down to the George to do my dirty chikken dance..its the only way I'll ever get laid..me and Byrner, my lover play hide the sausage in the mens toilets !!
If you'v got a 32 middle and 36 on the back you'l get up anything. Switching to 2X10 is expensive, as you mentioned, going 2X9 is allot cheaper as you can keep your shifters rear mech etc.. If you're changing cranks and shifters you may as well just buy a new groupset, the new XT is incredibly good value, even the new deore looks really good.

But am I not right in thinking that if I go 2x9 that the largest cassette sprocket I can get is 34?

I'm not sure whether I'm touched or worried that everybody seems to be taking my worn out Granny ring so seriously!!!
