If one was to be interested in purchasing a Digital Video recording camera, what would one look for and what would won be expecting to pay for such a device. Would one of those jobs you see in Harvey Norman for â¬399 suffice ..for DVD type quality..

I have a JVC 36 HDD that I'm thinking of selling. very little use. similar to the one Don linked to. Borrow it, try it, whatever. Will sort out some kind of deal with you if you like it.
It's great not having to bring different tapes/discs. holds 60gb, as far as I remember.. I think it's 16hrs at best quality. you can also upload onto them as far as I know, so you can fill it with Hanna Montana, and bring it on holiday... (plug into the tv, and Sophie is happy).

Can you get one with the capability of plugging in a remote helmet cam like Stan does? Helmet cam with your live commentary could be quite entertaining. Would make a change from the heavy breathing we had in France!
They become more expensive with AV in, and I think they are prone to vibration. something to do with the way it records. Technogeekynerds might be able to shed more light here. I understand chainsaws, and such like.
AV input costs a bit more but its well worth it if you plan on capturing some on-bike footage. Otherwise, most of your footage will be of you standing at the side of the track while others have fun
Helmet cams do what you need. spending good money on a suitable camcorder, then having wires etc hanging out of yer backpack etc is a pain in the ass. Plus, if you crash, and break it, you will cry.
