Bike rack suggestions

I'm looking for suggestions for a rear mounted bike rack (no tow bar) that would fit both a VW Passat and Hyundai Tucson/IX35. Ideally could take kids bikes too as well as my full suss Pivot 5.7. Ability to carry 2 or 3 bikes should be sufficient.

Don't want to spend too much but don't want to buy cheap buy twice etc.

Does anyone use either of these one from Halfords?

I've found that the ones you put on the back of the car warp the metal on the boot, so your best bet is to buy a tow bar and get one for that, the other ones are brutal

As Erica said, you're wasting your time with those boot mounted ones if you want to carry more than one bike. There is no way to space them properly and they all will rub against each other plus you can never trust them especially on a motorway.
Having said that, they are better than nothing! I had a Hollywood one for a while and it worked, it was on an old banger car so I didn't care about scratches etc.
One thing that really annoyed me was boot access, nearly impossible with the bikes attached.
Tow bar or roof rack are the only 2 reasonable long term solutions I'm afraid.

The Bones 3 is a decent rack. Used it for years, but upgraded to a towbar rack when I got the new wheels. The thing to watch with the Saris is the fitting but their website will tell you if your car is suitable

Somethin like this bad boy here, with a power outlet, and a hoop for running a locking cable around your bike(s)

They come with instructions, so you could fit it yourself, that's what I did...well when I saw myself, i really mean Oscar :)

feck it, maybe I should just keep the golf and keep chucking bike in the boot - seems easiest, safest and cheapest (if not messiest solution) all round

Saris bones 3 is a great little handy bike carrier for the money and far better than the big clunky scaffolding tube ones but is a bit of a pain if your trying to fit different types/sizes of bikes and with 3 bikes on it at the same time puts alot of strain on the bootlid. If your planning on keeping the car get the detachable towbar option as its a much better long term solution . I had one fitted on the Gti last year and once detached and the electrical socket hidden away was completely invisable. I got mine done in Malcoms in Rathmines it only took a few hours and they done a super neat job all in for €400 all in with electrics. It was the Witter brand towbar which are excellent quality without the whopper premium that Thule charge for the OE Towbar equipment. If your not fussy about the car and just want the cheapest strongest solution just buy a standard towbar on the web fit it yourself and then pick up the Thule foldable bike rack, they hold 3 adults bikes no problem and are around €70-€80 and are a decent bit of kit.
