lapierre Zesty

Thinking of getting a Lapierre Zesty 314 . Does anyone have one or have any views on them. Would it make a good xc bike ? .
no it would not make a good XC bike..thats what you would call an all mountain kind of bike and while you might enjoy pedalling it downhill, you will probably be bollixed getting it up the hill in the first place...
if you want a full susser you can ride all day..then a Specialized Stumpjumper, one of the 130mm La Pierres or a Bannondale Rush or prophet and you definitely don't want it to weigh over 27lbs..
a trance or something similiar is also a good choice ,i'm sure all the manufacturers have models to suit..
If you want to ride real XC then an EPIC or a hardtail like an XTC or a Scott id the way to go..
There are people who can ride 6" Bikes as crosscountry bikes but they are all completely mental..
Richie
still too much unless you are a savage..its not just the travel , its the set up on it..
xc bikes have 80mm to 100mm. 140 is allmountain territory.
If your question was "will it make a good mountain bike", then yes.
Eoin Keith has a zesty, and he can probably use it for xc, but he is a genetic freak who enjoys running or cycling phenominal distances. plus he has 100kg in his backpack.
So you need to ask yourself what you mean by XC....
The Zesty walked away with a recent "Trail Bike" test in "What Mountain Bike" against some very good opposition (Stumpjumper, Trance etc) - I'm guessing Richie is thinking of the Spicy when he says it's heavy? The Zesty weighs less than 13kgs. Probably be an ideal bike for trail riding but I'm guessing probably still too heavy for XC racing!

i probably am thinking of the Spicy..a cross country bike is anything that you can race XC on or take in at least a 3 hour spin comfortably on..i have lost count of the amount of people I have seen on " Xc bikes " murder themselves on spins because there bike is not suitable.
and they are usually the ones holding everybody up !
you need to be a special kind of savage to ride one on an XC spin, Eoin keith is a good example..
Probably be perfect for a "Richie's Saturday Morning Crew" - less than ideal for "Byrner's *******s" on a Tuesday evening!!!
Richie's saturday morning crew are apprentices training for better things... If xc is your choice, get an xc bike. if you can afford more than one bike, get a zesty/enduro/trance also. this you can use whenever you are at the front of the pack.
thats probably true..though we do get eejits turing up on big bikes that hold us up because they are dying on them going uphill and strangely even going downhill..
I have seen so many people come along on big machines not enjoy the spin because they are bollixed lugging them around..I ride my beast of A saturday because if I i didn't ..nobody would enjoy the pace..
I like your description of saturdays , Stewart..i would just hate to see people buy bigger bikes and suffer on spins..
There are several people who would really enjoy their spins if they had went and bought
lighter bikes , believe me just because they have 140mm of travel..that doesn't mean they automatically can bate down hill either ..
But whatever way you look at it..you won't be racing XC on a bike like that, unles your name is Robin Seymour !!
I've been looking at the Zesty 314 too and I'm torn between it and the Stumpjumper elite.
Just can't decide on which one.
Its for all mountain use 3-4 hour spins an hour of which would be on road.
Its my first full susser to go with a Giant terrago which i've been on for the last 3 years.
Any help??
I know the S-Jumper is about 1lb lighter but reviews say the Zesty is better over longer distances and generally faster ...
i don't know about the reviews..saying one fullsusser is faster over distances seems a bit overacting..its your legs that will make the difference, reviews don't always work..people respond differently to different bikes..
1 lb is not that much of a difference and if you are not in a hurry then it matters even less.
The lapierres are a fine bike..i have 2..ones a carbon XC race bike and the other is a fullsuss hacker..
in your circumstances I'd just go for the one that catches your eye..don't agonise about bikes that are so similiar..
I like the colour and the spec of the lapierres and they are great value..
we have had a few issues with Specialized bikes in EPIC..not all great. If you do buy a Lappiere in The Superstore, tell them Richie recommended it.
You can drive yorself mad with the choice of bike, but the bike that I have seen perform the best out of that category of machine, is the Giant Trance by absolute miles..Thats looking at loads of riders on loads of spins over the last year or so..I rode one around Ballinastoe for a review and I couldn't fault it..
my apologies if this adds to your confusion..but its the kind of argument/discussion that just goes round and round in circles.
But from where I stand, as somebody who usually leads 30 to 40 people on spins week in week out ,of all levels..i can usually spot a good bike ..
Richie
tyres and possibly lockout will outweigh a lb or three quite easily. especially on the road. the zesty would do fine for your spin, i'm sure... but if everybody else is on carbon xtc's you'll suffer....
Yeah i think for looks I'd go with the lapierre, What are they like in cyclesuperstore on discounts or throwing stuff in ??
I signed up for loyalty card but any chances of getting it much cheaper ?
I talked with Joe in Hollingsworth about the Spechialized and he was quite forward with price reductions.
So as it stands the Stumpjumper elite is €200 cheaper than the lapierre.
