Do people trust carbon, seat posts, stems, bars, etc? These are all things that will (almost) never fail or break in aluminium, but I've heard stories of carbon going bang with bad consequences. Are the weight savings worth the risk? And is carbon best left off a bike that will get used for hard FR/DH?

I would never use a carbon stem but I do use carbon bars... probably has something to with the fact that if a stem breaks it's face in ground time, if your bars break then it's maybe face in ground time but more likely crazy one handed bronco time....
Carbon seatposts... sorta the same, don't fancy picking carbon shards out of my hole.
But then, I've never seen a seatpost snap, I've seen seat clamps break, I've heard of carbon one's snapping...
But then, I'm fat compared to the people these are designed for.
Thing is, carbon hides damage really well, might look grand but underneath the lacquer it's cracked, all it takes is one good bang... (that's what she said... weee hay)

Crash damage is something you can't really design for completely, you can build in strength in the knowledge that stuff will take a hammering, that's why DH components are heavier than XC ones but they still break.
If you were to compare aluminium and carbon leaving out the crash damage thing then carbon pretty much out-performs aluminium, once it's designed well, it's stiffer where you need it, more compliant where you need it and has a better strength to weight ratio.
So there you go....

I broke a carbon seatpost..however that may have just been the usual Byrne wearing it out syndrome..it didn't exactly snal..it just kind of gave up on me one day and I copped it in time to stand up..

Not sure about carbon components but I've never had an issue with carbon frames...

Lets say I had some carbon bars that are too wide and I wanted to make them narrower, am I right in thinking that you score the end with a nail (or something sharp) and then end give a smack with a hammer, like breaking glass?
in the shop we see far more failed alloy posts than carbon ones. So i'd have no problem running a carbon one. I'd second what oscar says thomson are the only way to go expensive but leagues ahead of everything else.

yeah and no people who have carbon seatpost etc are generally more serious cyclists so tend to use there bikes more so they should suffer from wear and tear
