Slippy Rotor

Hi Gurus,

The rear brake (Hayes stroker trail) on my bike was not functioning so well, having discussed it with a few of the senior lads who have experience in all things brakes & brake related it was decided that a pad change might help.

So, I changed the pads but they're still not gripping the disk / rotor, I can only assume this is now a rotor issue, can they become too polished whereby the surface no longer provides friction & hence stopping power? Will a rotor change fix this or can the rotor be run under some kind of steel brush to rough it up a bit, or will this destroy both the rotor and the pads?

Have you tried overhauling the rear caliper? Or how old are your brakes?

Take it for a spin Harri might just need to get the new pads to bed in, Is there a lip on the edge of the disk, if so replace it. My brake always feel crap for the 1st half hour then they bed in.

clean the disk with degreaser and give it a rub with wire wool. That will make sure its not contaminated. Then give the pads a chance to bed in.

If you oil the disc and not the pads you should be fine

But seriously - yes to all of the above - I shall degrease the rotor - It can't be too worn, as anyone who's ridden with me knows I rarely if ever use the brakes.

are you sure they were bled right..even with contaminated discs, you should still get some grip !!
are you getting some grip when you have the bike static and then with some pressure theres limited grip I'd say Pads and durty disc, but if the pads aren't even engaging then its the brake itself !!

Are you pulling the right lever? sometimes I mixed up which is front and which is back

crap, it was the lever- I was puling the wrong one . . .

yeah - I'm getting grip alright - it's grabbing the disk, but just not holding it like it used to do - & not like the front brake which is still fantastic. Yeah - the pressure seems fine in the system - I bled the avids on the other bike & changed the pads & that's going fine (outside of the fact I have yet to replace the hanger)
