Website for training supplements

I've used this site before and it's pretty good in terms of range, prices and shipment etc..

http://www.myprotein.co.uk/

If you're training for XC racing etc.. it helps you to supplement your diet with a bit more more protein and energy to keep you going longer and recover faster etc..

It stocks the likes of protein powders (for muscle building/recovery), protein flapjacks (for when you're out on a spin), carbohydrate powders (for energy).

The carb. powders will save you a fortune on energy drinks, just take a look at the ingredients on a bottle of Lucozade Sport or the likes next time and you'll see ingedients such as Dextrose, Fructose or Maltodextrin and possibly some Electrolytes (maintain salt levels/hydration)- you can get all this stuff in powder form and just mix it with water and a small bit of fruit juice for taste at a fraction of the cost.

There's other stuff like Glucosamine for joint health etc..

If you order stuff, you can use my referrers code: MP107340 and you'll get 5% off your first order, I'll get a few bonus points as well so we're all happy :D

you've made my day..I love the old protein powder i do..I was tiring of the Brunos Super chunks anyway!!
If you are going for the years supply try http://www.bulkpowders.co.uk/

Having said that you will find that most sensible research into the area would tell you that unless you are a veggie or unless you are pumping some serious iron your diet already has too much protein and you will just piss all this away.
Having said that there is also some sensible research that says you can reduce muscle wastage during endurance training if you take some protein regularly while you are doing it. But it has to be the fast digesting stuff that your stomach will actually absorb while your baiting along. It gets fierce complicated.

But as Mr Killkenny says you can make your own energy / protein / recovery drinks for a fraction of the cost. Anyone who knows anything about it will tell you that the supplements industry is 90% money making bollix, with some sound thinking lost in amongst it all somewhere. The trick is understanding it all and figuring out what’s best for you.

Make sure you understand what you are doing though, its easy to get carried away and **** yourself up by gulping down loads of stupid ****e. There are plenty of pro athletes with mouths full of rotten teeth, diabetes, liver problems and emotional issues not to mention ****ed up nervous systems all because they where cracking into every fancy new wonder shake they could get their hands on.
And people, unless you are going to ride you bike in the Sahara while wearing a tinfoil suit, you don’t need all those bloody electrolyte replacement things that seams to be cluttering up the shelves at the moment.

Well I wanted people to think I knew what I was on about so I went for the smart lad font

I used to do this but eventually found it very annoying to have to be always mixing the drink up. Wiggle do a huge tub of lucozade sport powder for 20 quid, makes about 15-20 litres which for the lack of hassle is nothing.

As for protein shakes I was under the impression that it was mainly useful for recovering from complete muscle breakdown ie by lifting weights, rather than muscle recovery needed after endurance. Just something that one of the big lifters I work with said - I'm sure someone who actually knows their stuff could confirm or deny this.
If that was a serious question RichardL, then...

I personally only use the stuff when racing. When I've got access to real food I use it. There is no subsitute for simply eating well. As little processed stuff as possible.

The research on all this stuff changes completely every few years anyway. The only consistant thing is to have a good diet, without too much of anything, and having as much natural foods as possible.

And Don't worry Byrner... no man with an Irish girlfriend could last long with any delusions of god-like status ;D
indeed the Herloohilly lad with his little font is right
you need to do your reading on this stuff

I used to just gobble a big protein shake after excercise but your body can only absorb a certain amount at one time - the rest just goes to waste and puts a strain on your digestive system plus bloating and farting etc..

it also really depends on how heavy/intense your training is, a lot of exertion and strain puts a toll on your bodies immune system too so don't run yourself into the ground

as Enduro points out - this stuff should just be supplemental to eating properly, definitely not a replacement, but it's handy after a spin/race to have a recovery drink in your car as your body is going to be needing some pay back for the deadly performance you've put in on that creasing spin....
