Might be too much fluid in system stopping pistons from going back all the way.If so let some off at master cyl .Try recentre caliper by loosen mounting bolts squeeze brake tight then re tighten bolts again.
didn't we get a lecture before off Gerry about Dot 4 and it being Hydroscopic or sypllittic or gooberant or something..that it absorbs water and increases the volume of the fluid in the brakes then when you change the pads you have more fluid than the system can operate properly,sounds suspiciously like that ( i can't believe i remembered that) however if you follow award winning Bike Mechanic Al Maxwells and my advice, I invented the Hydraulic disc brake..buy shimano, they use mineral oil..which isn't Hyperbolic and once kept clean can't increase in volume , therefore upsetting the something with the yoke !

Dot 4 also eventually rots any plastic parts that are in the breaks and eats the rubber seals. So they never last as long as in a brake that uses mineral oil.
Try letting the bleed screw on your lever out enough so that any excess fluid can weep out when you reset your pads. Then when there fully home tighten it up. No need to take it out completely

So why do 90% of the cars in the world use DOT fluid in their brakes systems..?? So if what your saying is true then we would all end up having to change the entire brake system in our cars every few years..!!
its not such a problem with car brakes as they are larger in size. With everything on a bicycle brake being smaller the tollerances need to be more accurate and there is a more noticeable difference when the seals and any plastic parts start to swell due to absorbing the fluid. The plastic parts are used to keep weight down. Thats not an issue in a general car brake and therefore most parts bar the seals will be made of metal. Im not making it up Mac i see it happen on a regular basis. The plastic parts in the levers swell up causing levers not to return and jam.

Oh and I totally agree... I too have never had a problem with Shimano brakes... One of the few things that Shimano do really well.. (that and their shoes) but I'm still gonna stick with the Avid's..!
