Brake adaptors question

Hi
i never knew that you can put rear brake adaptors to front and the other way around.
A friend of mine told me you can do that but there is difference in 20mm but how does it work

160mm REAR adaptor will work as 140 in the front or will it be 180?
IF it's possible.

Yes some 20mm adapters are different... don't ask me what the difference is but I know from experience that a standard qr adapter won't always work on a 20mm fork..!
