Avid Juicy 5's any good?

All I hear is bad things about these, are they really that crap?

have them on my hardtail. new ones. had problems to stop on steep descents.
i have hopes on other bikes and they kick ass.
anyway. i don't mind juicy 5 for XC riding but i'd go for sth better for AM/DH

Never used juicy 5's but I've had two sets of juicy ultimates and just didn't like them. My trek has elixir r's though and they seem much better. Much more power and a far nicer feel.

I have Juicy 3's on my commuter, Juicy 5's on my DJ bike, Juicy Ultimate's on my XC race bike, Elixir's on the Rize...

I've used Juicy's 3's, 5's, 7's, Elixir's, BB5's and BB7's

Never had any single problem or issues with any of them whatsoever.. absolutely fantastic stopping power from all of them including the BB5's and BB7's.. in fact the mechanical disc brakes I've found to be almost better in terms of modulation and control..

But then again I know how to set up, install and maintain my brakes regardless of who makes them...

And I don't use spray oil to lube my bike unlike the majority of retarded MTBers out there..

I'm looking for BB7 for my STP if anyone had them

Are they retarded from using spray oil or did they use spray oil because they were retarded.

I use spray oil to clean my chain, but I'm quare careful.

On brakes...

I, like Mac, have used all the Avid brakes, and I agree on the cable discs, I have them on my commuter and they're deadly, the only thing I've found with the Juicy 3's is a small bit of overheating on long descents but it's nothing to worry about in Ireland.

If you're having problems stopping then put a bigger disc on the front, I'd always go for a 185mm disc on the front wheather it was XC or just normal riding, but then there's a lot of me to stop.

A bit of both really... don't know how many times I've seen people using spray oil to lube their drive train... and at the same time spraying oil all over their brake discs... and then they bitch and moan about how their brakes don't work... f'ing idiots..!!

Colin, an oldskool legend like yourself would never fall into that category.. you know your bikes and how to look after them..

Some of them had major problems with the master cylinder leaking (pretty poor design imho, even the new seal kit didn't fix it - it was caused by corrosion of the seal face on the lever body by the DOT5.1) and I found sitcky pistons to be a problem too. Bleed kit is rediculously expensive.
They really only ever felt adequate.

Swapped them on 2 bikes for Deore 595's, much better brake for similar money, I think.

personally I haven't the time or interest to be fiddling with Brakes that require the patience of a saint and the skills of a surgeon to bleed..so I use Shimano brakes..everybody has replacement pads, you can bleed them simple as ****..they work perfect and never fail and if you are stuck you can use baby oil in them !!
Reach adjustments are simple and the levers don't snap if you look crooked at them.
I have Deores on 2 bikes..simple , cheap and effective..
I ride my bike all weathers, 6 times a week, sometimes twice a day..in horrendous plces that the poor thing gets away from me and ends up ghosting down the mountain on me.
But it wouldn't have lasted as long as it has without me taking care of it, regardless of what Maccer might say about me !!!
And Colin..spray oil on a chain ..you're mental !! my bikes get so much use, i use motorbike engine oil on the chain..but sparingly..cheap,plentiful and **** the environment..!
One thing I will say, and I agree 100% with everything Mac is saying about brakes and set up, etc, but I just can't be arsed, your bike will last longer if you treat it with respect..but if you have more than one bike..use the same brakes on them all !

I have a can of this stuff called Mutts Nuts, it's a dry lube.... I know I know.... dry lubes are sh*te, but this one is wierd, it actually works, not on chains, on other bits.

I use winter oil on my chain, the green stuff, all year round.

Motorbike engine oil..... jeaaasus

There's feck all wrong with 3 in 1, it's a bit manky but it works.

Anyway... brakes, yeah, they're all great, pully pully stoppy stoppy

well if it wasn't for the gickstabbing English MTB magazines..everybody would be using 3 in one Oil and 15w 40 !!

Yeah, the old Deores were the best, utterly simple and effective. I smiled every time I changed the pads. The Strokers I now have are fine but the pad design is a joke, stupid clips that break, I have one pad hanging out the back caliper for weeks now.

Anyhoo, as Colin said, pully, stoppy.

What is the deal with dry lube, is it just water? I put some on my chain it and I swear it evaporated as it was pouring out the nozzle.

I have juicy 5's on both my bikes.
Cant fault them but there are so many different type of pad i think this could affect the performance i usually go for the sintered pads.

Organic all the way when it comes to pads... wet or dry they bite much better than sintered or other compounds I've tried.. they do wear a bit quicker but I buy them in bulk packs of 4 or 8 so no issue really...
