The rest of the XC bike is fine, but the current forks (RockShox Reba Race) have taken a thorough beating and are feeling very lazy, so I'll keep them for the hard times and get some new ones for next year
so - what should I go for? I hear a lot about the RockShox SIDs - are they the sh*t?
On CRC I see the following SID variations:
Race
Team
World Cup
The World Cup are the mentallers money (> 700 euro)- but they're nearly the same weight as the much cheaper Race version (455 euro)
and it's weight I'm looking to save, and 80mm travel preferred.
What about those Pace forks - are they lunatics money too?
don't buy paces they blow up all the time. Unless you like stripping your forks all the time steer well clear. The sids are the schnizzle but as there an xc race fork they have the stiffness of a over cooked piece of pasta. The chassis of the reba is that bit stiffer so if you go for the sids you will notice the flex in the corners. Have a look at manitou minutes there sweet.
I have heard not a bad thing about the Margura Durins (CRC have the 08s on sale for â¬500) and if I was to do this year over, I would get them.
The new SIDS are nice. The DT-Swiss/Pace forks are amazing XC forks, plush, light and for me at least, not flexy, I love them, BUT, they are big money and need more care (servicing) than the Maguras or Sids...
Fergal y'bender I have a lovely set of 2006 Fox F80RL's for sale at the moment.. look a bit like these one's they do.. yours for â¬150 blips if you want them.. in 100% perfect working order, no damage, 185mm steerer, disc specific an all that jazz..
The flexy SIDs Al mentioned might be the pre-2008 ones. The new ones are essentially a slimmed down version of the Reba. I had a pair of SID Races on my Epic and they were great - light and plenty stiff. There's a different damping system in the Race and Team models but as to whether you'd notice the difference between then - who knows? If they're for a race bike then the remote lockout is really handy.
it's only the pre 08 ones i've ridden but i still reckon the newer ones while stiffer can't be as stiff as the reba and the stiffness is defenitly worth the weight difference. Probably more so when jsut riding rather than racing. If its a race only bike then the sids are probably cool but i'm sure any of the decents on the djouce nps course would put them on the limit. As there designed with the sort of non tech riding we witnessed at the olympics in mind.

I had been thinking about Fox's alright Magic, but all this Rockshox talk has me too excited, especially now that Rossco has weighed-in...

something you'd build with that new techno Lego...is this stuff for real??

Most of what you boys class as xc is more like what the rest of the world classes as hardcore trail riding/ light freeride. Thats the reason theres so many broken carbon frames between you all and why Tim has been destroying forks (with his size he should be using something like a 36 with a bolt through axle for your so called xc). Ballinagoober is pretty hardcore in the eyes of the rest of the world. The mega avalanche is the worlds most mental downhill race and theres not one bit of it that anyone expcept the newbies in the club couldn't ride. We are hardcore and need hardcore bits. None of this light spindly weight weenie **** unless you have a limitless bank balance and a taste for collecting broken bike parts.
