Building a bike advice.

OK, So I've been looking for a bike for quite some time now and everything is too small/too expensive. So I've been toying with the idea of buying components and getting a new/used frame in my size(there's a few for sale on here). I have been buying some components recently but that's for my current cheap bike which I'm just upgrading stuff so it's safe and usable. :eek:

So, I've been thinking about what I need and have run into a few things which I'm not sure of. I have a list below with a few questions, Could you answer them and point out anything I'm missing?

Frame

• Frame
• Brake Leavers
• Brake Cables
• Brake calipers
• Rotors
• Gear changers
• Cables
• Front Mech
• Rear Mech
• Crankset(Usually include cranks + sprocket and attachments?)
• Chain
• Cassette
• Wheels
• Inner tubes x 2
• Tyre x 2
• Front forks
• Headset? (What's this, it's something to do with attaching the fork to the frame?)
• Stem
• Handlebars
• Seat Post
• Saddle

by the time you add all that up and add in your time to build it
plus all the grief if you get it wrong and no warranty
you could be walking out of richiecycles with a blinging machine
and money in your ar se pocket to buy us all beers after the first club race.
you also left out the bell !!

Unless you know exactly what you want Id recommend a trip to a bike shop where they can advise you properly and give you options for your budget.

Yeah if you have to ask what a headset is you probably shouldn't be building it yourself.

I'd buy a bike that's in one piece, learn to replace the worn parts yourself over time, if you find it all handy enough then you can build your next bike....but I doubt you'd save any money, you'll have to buy a selection of tools too.

I'll let Gerry answer this one..I can sell you a new deadly bike..but Gerry will put a fine bling machine together for you.
Unless you are an expert, have tried everything from total pieces of ****, through adequate bikes, the you are wasting your time bespoking yourself a bike..
learn to ride on a half decent machine.
This sport is the greatest in the world..I've tried several sports at a high level and I helped invent this one.
So I know what I'm talking about.
The best riders on the planet learned to ride any old bike and got their skills up.
Trust me..theres nothing as pathetic as a hopeless Joe on a deadly bike..
if you want to be a **** hot rider..get a BMX and a midrange mtb,,
do a few races both DH and XC..swallow the experience and learn from your mistakes !

I built my own bike up last year.
I had stuff left over from years gone by and just bought what i needed.
Had a bit of knowledge of how to put it together but i enjoyed building it.
Ive been adding to it ever since depending on how the funds are.

The headset is basically there to house the upper and lower bearings. It tightens the fork to the frame and allows you to rotate your handle bar.
A good hammer and a piece of wood will be needed to get her in.

It can work out more expensive depending on what parts you want or have.

For a light frame decent group set (xt+ or x0), decent wheels and a good fork it will cost 2000 easy.
I didnt have that money to spend at first so thats why i bought mine in bits and pieces.

Thanks all for the advice! I certainly didn't think it would cost that much!(2000) I was thinking more 750-800 which is my budget... But a lot of used components

And why do you say a BMX and a mid range MTB?

What would views be on the Felt Q620 or the Focus Killer Bee, would these be alright for XC etc?

Gerry is Mac the Knife. Even at your budget he may be able to help you out.

Richard, considering you don't even know what a headset is I'd say you'd be much better off buying a new bike from your LBS..

There can be so many variables when it comes to building modern MTB's & with your limited experience the whole thing could end up costing you a lot more in the long run.. including tools etc..

I have a focus killer bee for sale with most of the parts , it just needs brakes, a crankset and a rear mech. It is in immaculate condition, hardly used. Pm me if you are interested and i will send a few pics, I could put it all together for you and keep it under the 500quid mark.

Richard, I have intended build a bike for my daughter, its painfully slow when you've no clue what your doing (like me). Great learning but the LBS route will get you a new bike, warranty and all the others supports you need. If your looking at Focus I'm riding the below and can't rate it highly enough. First MTB and best friend!
