Ratoath BMX track - savage fun!

I'm just back from Ratoath where I took a few shots of Eamo showing me how it's done!
Tried it myself and all I can say is ..... I want a BMX!
The work that Ratoath BMX club (and others) put into that place is mindblowing, go and have a look!
It's great fun and savage training (for speed, balance and core) and I'll be definitely visiting the track on a regular basis. I was completely new to the BMX lark and I was able to get around the track no bother, even managed to get a bit of air here and there (and land on my arse once!).

Jebus. Its 22 years since a raced a bmx and I cant believe I might have to go and buy one after seeing this.....

Looks brilliant, I might head out this weekend for a go. Anyone game?

Eamo, From the photos I see full face helmet seems to be a requirement - what else would you advise for armour?
full length knee pads the ones that include shin pads, similar ones for the elbows/forearms such as

tough gloves, and a full face is really good idea particularily for the powder puffs.
Decent footware is also a good idea if you have to bail out, avoid those fashionable skinny soled runners.
Lots of BMXers still use Vans but i'd avoid the cloth topped ones and get a good solid pair of vans like these http://www.vans.com/microsites/bmx/gravel.php
or 5,10 freeriders

Brought my six yr old nephew out to Ratoath today. Great buzz out there, the glorious sunshine helping matters. He was only really able for the kiddies course which he absolutely loved and Id say did about 200 laps of it. All the kids were great fun and very chatty. Apparently my bike is very cool, I even had to lend it out a few times. Pity I didnt have the skill to do it justice. Some serious talent on the main track, they were doing proper gate starts for people. I tell you my legs were like jelly at the end of a single lap. Its tough going!
Fair play to all involved in getting the track in (eamo, shay etc). They are still doing fencing and working on the entrance, but thats some facility. Well done!
glad you liked it, you'll get some buzz from racing, next time bring a few more people with you.
Cheers Orla,

Great to see you out there. If people want to come out please do, just remember you need to fill in the Membership form and also join cycling Ireland. You can use the track once off but need to join the club thereafter, we have kept the fee very cheap at €30 for youth and €40 for adults per annum. We are still in fundraising mode and from what we have rasied so far we have achieved a very high standard track. First race hopefully in November.
Now we just need more tracks and Clubs around the country..
