some of you have seen this on my facebook page but for those of you who have not seen it, its not a skit from the Republic of Telly..there are members on here that I know for a fact are closet hillwalkers. I honestly don't know how we are going to counter this. I was going to resign from Mountainbiking but then I realised no, f*ck it...I can't because I am all that stands between us and an ever rising tide of Hillwalkers..If I quit it would send a message to certain parties that they have won and I just couldnt live with that. as it is I spend many sleepless nights wondering how many middle aged women and Bear Grylls wannabes are being created in the canteens of Multinationals and civil service hives on a Monday morning after some peoples weekend hillwalking. I know its shocking and I blame Outsider Magazine, Great Outdoors and Merrel for this pandemic.
So people the next time you choose the scratcher on a Sunday morning, just bear in mind that out there in Wicklow and Counties I can't even pronounce , there are people squeezed into ski pants and weilding pointy sticks crawling slowly but inorexorably to the tops of mountains and enjoying the views.
Yeah, I dunno Richie. They're all people, like ourselves, enjoying our hills. Can't we all just get along like? All the arguments in that short piece said basically - I do **** that Mountain Bikers do up here, but I'm older, and less Awesome. No mention of MTB of course, but that's a good thing in this case. We've all had the shakey stick in our direction.
BTW - Have you checked RL's Strava lately? Are you really sure you saved him? :) I was up at the Bluer earlier after the spin - Dundrum or Orwell or some other road gayer club was there gettin in our way of our usual Tuesday scoops. I expected RL to be there defending Epic.
OK, sorry, I'm being a kunt to one of the nicest chaps I've met in our scene, apogolies. My point stands that I'm a) drunk and b) who gives a ****(hoot) about some oul wans and their male counterpart havin a ramble in the hills?
I should close this drunken ramble with something.....
Stay on topic please, Mr Beard..you're fooked now though, all the old biddys in Ireland will be after you now for speaking such sacrilege ! However you are dead right, John Creedon is great, very soothing ! I could never imagine him doing anything mental !
Best, example of mountain walking or climbing or mountaineering I remember was being in O'Sheas Gulley on Carauntoohil about 13 years ago in winter when it was full of ice and snow and we caught up with a bunch of local farmers out for a bit of crack in their work boot and assorted old oil skins, wooley jumpers etc. they were knarly and well able and as comfortable as could be. Not a piece of Goretex, a pole, a GPS between the lot of them and they were having a ball.
