I dont know if this was posted elsewhere, but a big congratulations to Eoin in his recent race.A 72 hour running race just outside Phoenix in Arizona against the best in USA and the world. He came 2nd!! Results are here...
Oh God ..... he ran over 300 miles, nearly 500kms!! That's incredible stuff! Interesting that 7 of the top 10 were over 40 and the guy in 6th was 60!
Well done Eoin!
I must say that I'm really fascinated by the mindset of people who compete in ultra-endurance events! At what stage does it stop being a race and just become an exercise in survival? I know from my limited experience of 6 hour bike races that by the end of even that short time your mind is beginning to "mess" with you. What is your thought process when you're 36 hours into a 72 hour race? Do you focus on the race, the pain, nice thoughts or just what you're going to have for tea when you're finished?
I'm not sure of the finial time but Eoin Finished the Art O Neill this time in about 6 hours 2 mins, I'd say most would struggle to do that on a MTB yet alone on foot.
Not to mention he navigates with a compass and doesn't use a map. Apparently he has it all in his head. He came through CP 2 45mins before his nearest rival.
When I mention he took a knock, it was a fall around table track and still went on to take the win. He got transported back to CP 2 to receive attention from medics and the this photo does it no justice of how week the cut was.
By the time Eoin was change and back to CP 2 only about half of the rest of the field had reached that point.
