Guys dont do this to me ive forgotten about all the pain,bad crashes,dodgy b and bs.That was my first 3 day race with little or no preparation.Real dangerous back then with huge bunches and crashes every 10 mins.Survived till finish and my mother wanted to know why i had chainwheel marks all over me .I think the bunch must of run over me.Then found out my mate Paul Murray was hit by car smashed shoulder was in wexford hos.Wheres my DH bike its damn safer.
Ah the good old gorey 3 day, Really did have a bad rap for crashes, Offroad is far safer by a mile. Karl your a true legend, No other epicurions can say they have race against the great Mr Roche.
That was before he became a savage.Took 2mins out of him in 25mile tt and was stoked then heard he had punctured fixed and made up time.A few of us had the privledge of taking Sean Kelly,Stephen Roche,Nicholas Roche out for spin in Leadsmines when Nicholas was about 15.Kelly was good on mtb but as for the rest of them it was great to have the upper hand.This year as a 50th pressie to ourselves my old road mates Aidan Ryan and Paul Murray(who both have beaten roche) are doing all the major climbes of tour de france in alps and pyrenees not everyones cup of tea but looking foward to it.Better get fit for it.
I see Liam Horner's name on the list there as well, not many on here will know who he was, but just so you know... he represented Ireland a number of times, was an olympian, an amazing racing cyclist, amazing bike handler and told very funny stories.
One of the real old school of roadies that did everything including riding off road on their winter bikes long before any yank dreamed up a mountain bike.
He died tragicly a few years ago, there's a memorial to him near the head of the Glencree valley (on the Sally Gap side just below the junction).

I remember doing the Gorey three day about ... years ago it started outside Tank engineering in Blessington.. (does it still start there? -sturdy products old building ( i worked there as a first propper job).. riding with emerald back then.. it was my first stage race.. so anyone who raced it is a savage in my book..
