Accident on Djouce today..

Big thanks to Stuart today for helping out at an accident on Djouce today.

Myself and a friend were coming to the bottom of Gran Canaria (I think) and he had a bad off. He somehow managed to cut himself very deep in the groin, upper leg area. No signal on the mobile meant I went for help and I found Stuart who looked after Dave while I called an ambulance.

He is now in Loughlinstown Hospital in surgery. They want to make sure there is no internal damage and the wound is too large to stitch under local anestethic.

Missed a major artery by 1/2 cm, so the doc said so he is very lucky.

Anyway I told Stuart I would post to let him know how he is. Now I'm off to do a first aid course. After today, I think it should be obligatory for everyone.

Also, in A & E in Loughlinstown hospital I met Paul from Team Worc with some cracked ribs, sustained in Ballinastoe. He was very puzzled when the nurses wanted to strap up his leg.....

yeah i spoke to Stewart afterwards when I got home there was 3 missed calls on my phone from him..he bailed early from our spin and came across you ..fair play to Stewart..let us now how your mate got on,
The mountainrescue is running a REC course for Charity..theres a post on the forum somewhere about it..

that mountain rescue REC course is deadly, highly recommend it!!
I've used it already. Called into work on the way to a downhill session, and had to do the heimlich manoeuvre on the security guard.
I'm sure he was wondering why I was wearing full body armor for it..

You know if anyone had walked in on that scene you would find lunch breaks at work a very lonely place Graham ;-)

As for first aid courses, everybody should go do one. This guy was millimetres from bleeding out... and it could be any one of us next. We all think it won't happen to us, only goober newbies, but these are a couple of middle age men, experienced on mtb's, riding within their limits on a slow trail. A stupid front end washout was all it took.
At least you should carry a first aid kit, but not a pre-made Aldi special. Just invest in some bandages & gauzes. plasters are for kids.

Well done Stewart for being there and knowing what to do. I hate these stories and as I result of incidents like these I no longer do solo rides. Having done a REC course I would advise everyone to do one, they are invaluable.

He is going to be alright, but still in hospital. There seems to have been no internal damage and he is now clipped or stapled or stitched together and recovering. He'll probably be let out tomorrow.

I've just put my name down for this first aid course. We were lucky yesterday, but if it had been bleeding it would have been a different story and I wouldn't have known what to do. Don't want that to happen again!

Stu helped me out too when I lost the chin from the big ring (feckin chainline, 2*9 is the way forwad now....). I just pulled the spare bandages and plaster from my pack yesterday, funny, must get them to you stu!

I think Stew just goes around waiting on people to crash so he can jump out of the bushes at them..wait a minute..I have a deadly picture of " Nurse Carr " on my laptop..i'll post it up at Lunchtime !!

To be fair, Barry was in control on Sunday. He assessed his patient, and then went for help. Dave started to hobble his way up the fire road, to keep himself pre-occupied more than anything. He seemed well in control of his emotions. lesser men would have freaked and gone in to shock. Medically, I did nothing, just tried to calm them, and wait for the ambulance. Thats all that could be done in the situation. you can't bandage a groin... unless that's your thing....

Dave was released from hospital yesterday afternoon, very sore but no long term damage.

No exercise for 3 weeks, no bike for 6 weeks...... could have been a lot worse.

6 weeks, not too bad, it may have dried out by then.

Scary stuff - one of my mates had a very similar accident about a year ago, over the bars and impaled on a stick which just missed several vital tubes carrying body fluids around his groin. The (unqualified but experienced) advice we were given later was to cover the puncture wound to prevent infection (he wasn't bleeding at all for some reason) and avoid the casualty moving by himself in case the movement made things worse. The doctor stapled him and he can still have kids if he wants, I have a photo of his hole somewhere, he split his head open on the next spin too.......incidentally there are still places on the REC course and it will be held in Old School House in Roundwood and the 6/7 June

Don, you'd want to see my lovely tiled porch, haven't gotten around to the kitchen yet but I have burnt out one angle grinder already:) Cheers!
