Raceface crank re-installation?

After removing the drive side crank to put on a new middle ring I replaced the crank, and tightened it using the big allan key bolt that holds the crank on. This seems to have done the trick but should I have whacked the crank arm back on with something BEFORE tightening the bolt.

What I am asking is - does the bolt do all the work when tightening putting the crank back on?
