I know I am crossing a rubicon here but if I have this friend who is thinking of getting lycra shorts, he is sick of wet baggies. He knows nothing about it. Should he be looking at bib shorts, normal shorts, any particular brand, comfort, fit, etc??? Any tips would be appreciated.

tell your friend to get waterproof baggies, that way he will still look the schizzle and not get beaten up

Tell your "friend" that for racing "lycra" is definately the way forward! From my limited experience, I much prefer bib shorts - they stay up better! Bit more difficult to answer "calls of nature" though! I would also buy "knickers" ie 3/4 length - but that's very much a personal choice! Cycle Superstore do Zoot (comfortable) and Assos (very expensive!) and have a good range in stock. I got a pair of Adidas bib 3/4 shorts from Hollinsworth recently and they're great but they have a limited range in stock!
From my wealth of experiance Lycra all the way baby 3/4 length are the shizzle just look at all the fast lads myself,RichardL,llandai,davek and a couple of other people who's names I can't remember!! Then you will wax your legs oh yeh!!

I'd say 45 PSI for 3/4 length and 35 PSI for normal shorts.......
Do it ... you do kinda feel like a plonker the first time you wear them , but they are better than baggies for racing. ( No more getting snagged on saddle etc etc )

This is the kind of nonsense I was hoping for, my friend is taking notes. On a related note the same friend keeps thinking about hardtails, would someone tell him to cop on!
Richard when it comes to calls of nature and lycra bib shorts, you know the routine. Best just not to think about it too much. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, and he would waste a fierce amount of time and make a scene if he had to stop and get off his bike. Anyway, lycra dries in no time.

It sounds like you are on the verge of a very slippery slope. Why only a few weeks ago, I too started to wear lycra. Then I started having improper thoughts about hardtails.... you know the rest ... new carbon fiber Specialized bike that you tell your wife cost half of what it really did.

I have had the advantage of looking like a twat on a fixed gear at a road race, plus the whole wearing lycra too so I just plain dont care.

Buy lidl/aldi for shorts to wear as undershorts and pay a bit more for good shorts, I got a nice deal on discovery team jersey and shorts, 20 for each.
