Racing in the DH winter league

Ok i'm looking into getting a DH bike and having a go at the winter DH league, just a couple of questions.
1. What group will i be in? (i'm 39 now will be 40 next year)
2. It will be my first time racing since 98 so is there a sports cat that i could enter to get back into it?
3 How do you sort out the licence to race in it? Every time i've gone to CI it seems to be all over the place and as much use as a chocolate tea pot.

Any help would be great
Thanks

good questions

1- You'll be in Vets (if you are not racing Sports), I'll be a vet too, we'll talk about record players and Miami Vice...
2- Yes, there's a Sports category alright
3- Indeed - the new site is messy - don't worry about a licence just for now until they get the registration part of the site online, could be a week or two until it's ready
Cheers Fergal, hopefully they will have it sorted soon, is there another way of getting the licence sorted just incase?
well, they'd need to get the site sorted well in advance of the first round of the league (17th Jan)

It may be the case that you apply for licence but you may not have it in time for the event (I'm expecting they'll have a large amount of licence requests to process), in this case - similar to previous years, you will just print off your confirmation email from Cycling Ireland showing that you have applied for your licence and this will be sufficient.

You can also do it the old fashioned way by downloading a membership form here and filling it out, getting it signed by a committee member, and sending it to CI with a cheque for the fee.

Note that First time applicants must attach a copy of their birth cert, drivers licence or passport. (Documentation will not be returned)
Gary,
Ross is the Club Secretary for 2010. well himself with jack as his understudy. But CI will have to have the licence thing set up and tuning before 10th January for the CX nationals.
Its always sorted before hand, but what usually happens is you apply and get a number and the licence number will sufffice.

Hey, who has my licence ?

I paid for a 2009 licence, which one of you robbers has it, who's been racing as me ?
Vets all the way Gary. As far as I know if you start the season in sports your stuck there for the rest of the season.
On the licence front if you don't think you are going to go to a lot of races you can get a cheap licence that covers you for club stuff and buy a day licence at each event when your signing on.
There's some good value in second hand bikes at the moment be patient and you'll get a bargain.
I started this DH lark almost a year ago and I've found there's a great wealth of knowledge of DH within the club.
The lads ain't afraid to share it either.
I have always believed that racing the Winter DH league is a great way of getting experience just riding a mountainbike the way its meant to be.
Everybody should have a go just make sure you wear your club Jerseys at them!!
and make us proud..Vets for you Gary, too..
seriously folks if you want to get better overall,, do these events !
just make sure you get a FULLFACE Helmet!! they are compulsory.
Which licence do i need for this then Fergal? is it this one?
Offroad racing ("restricted competition") licence: €85?
How soon can i apply for it? or would i be better off just getting the standard CI licence and doing the one day licences for these few events just to see how i get on first.
yes - that one: Offroad racing ("restricted competition") licence: €85?

do the sums yourself - restricted competition licence: €85
one day licence (assuming you are a basic CI member): €10

so you'd need to be doing 9 or more events for the restricted competition licence to make sense
bear in mind there are over nearly 30 MTB events currently on the calendar for 2010....
You can keep a look out on Irishdh for a bike there's a few good deals now and then, I'd stay away from the kona's. The thing about getting a downhill bike is you won't ride it anywhere near as much as the XC bike so to really get your use out of them you need to be racing. Might be best to ask around and see if anyone has a bike lying up that you could use for the winter league and then take it from there.
It's been a long time since i raced and after the other weekend i kinda got the bug again,as for bikes there is so much choice out there now, i mean a 6inch bike was the big bike in them days, the giant box 1 was all the rage.
I think if i had the bike i would race as much as i could but i take you point on board Adam, maybe get a loan of a bike first and see if it realy is what i want to do again.
Gary. i will explain the situation, again.
jack/ Rossco are the people to talk to..Jack is Club Secretary and Rossco is training him in.
You have to have Cycling Ireland Membership to be a member of EPIC.
You can get a club one, but its only for non racers.
I would recommend the Restricted one as you won't be road racing.
One day licences are a waste of money and only for people doing a couple of races a year.
If memory serves you also can't win a championship event on a one day Licence either.
Everybody is in the same position. So you're not going to get left out!!
And theres no reason why you can't race a full season on a Cannondale Prophet.
You would be surprised how good some people are on them and a big DH bike doesn't make others go any faster either.
