Hi folks, new to the forum here and have some questions.
I used to mountain bike when I was in school, nothing extreme, just go ride some trails and have fun(this was all over in Canada). I havn't been on my bike(bar a few times the last couple days) for about 8-9 years. I have an old Specialized Hard Rock Comp and it's still holding up well but it needed some TLC so I had picked up a few new things that it needed. This is where I have now run into issues and looking for your help and assistance hopefully.
I replaced a broken right hand shifter with a shimano alivio 8spd. I replaced the rear derailleur with a SRAM X7, replaced rear cassette with sram 8 spd, and then replaced the chain, brakes and few other bits.
ok, now my issue. I can adjust the rear derailleur first at the smallest cog set the cable and everything is grand, but then as i attempt to spin the wheels and shift to the large cog, it will not shift gears for every click on the shifter and I can only get as high as the third or fourth largest cog but my shifter is all the way to first gear. So this has me a little confused and am hoping for some knowledgable assistance here :) hope that makes sense to you fellas, and ladies if they are about also.
have i made a mistake and these bits are not compatible? any help is appreciated and look forward to getting to know some people here and learning of some trails around Ireland.
Hi Jon, a shimano shifter will not work with a SRAM rear deraileur. For the front deraileur it's doesn't matter but rear shimano/SRAM are not compatible. Either get a shimano rear deraileur or a SRAM shifter.
Been there done that, at home now making my way rapidly through a bottle of Bushland Reserve Shiraz Aldi's best at €5.99 sure you can't go wrong. Really nice too!!!!
good man Tiernan ..I like your style !! but bring that to Stewart in Sprocket Cycles in Bray or the Bike Rack Kids in Cabinteely..I think its a cable issue rather than a Shimano Sram incompatibility issue..no offence bit I doubt incompatibility is a big issue at the lower range like Alivio and X7..
don't quit on it yet..its a piece of machinery..you can make it work !!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaa! but I think the well is filling, so not so much in the well, mind you more in it than mine or yours cause mine is a bottomless tin of tuna I can see the bottom all the time cause its fkin empty:)
