Yiz did a grand job of telling me what camera to buy, so I'll give ye a shot at helping me find a new motor. The winner can have the honor of throwing the match when I burn out the Focus for the insurance.
I am not sure what motor defines me a person, but I ride bikes alot so need space, for bikes and other misc ****e. It would also appear that the misses is about to spawn, so it will need all those magic gadgets they have in the adds for keeping your offspring intack. I also find myself 'off piest' quite a bit. Have a 10 year old Focus Estate, had it five years, killed it good and proper, but it was doin me fine untill the engine fell out.
Some random thoughts on the subject that I have had to date is a follows:
- I ain't buying anything new, you would need to be mad.
- Do you have to be able to actually drive your old yoke into a forecort to avail of the scrapage deals?
- I could just get a newer version of the old yoke I had, they seem ok.
- The irresponsible part of my brain wants to buy a big feck off 4x4 and drive it over some hippies.
- The responsible bit thinks I should get something that runs on apple juice and the love of my fellow man.
- The practical bit says the running cost better not be too crazy.
- My socio economic grouping would dictate that I should probably buy a slightly old BMW and a pair of nice sunglasses. My focus was without doubt the worst in the work car park. But then I would say it was also the only one that ever took a corner on two wheels.
- Why are Kia's and Skoda's cheaper that other cars, they have somewhat bent names, but that aside they seam to be better value than other yokes for the same cash.
- Are cars like Audi's and Beamers better machines or did someone just decide they looked cooler so therefore they should cost more?
- Whats better, smaller estates that are kind of new (2/3 year old focus / A4 / 3 Series) v's the bigger but slightly older ones (4/5 year old mondeo / passat / 5 series / A6)?
- What about Octavia's and Laguna's? They seam to be reasonable big, but cheap for the money.
Don't really know how much I want to spend. I don't want to speand anything at all to be honest, spawn cost money you know, but then I want to get something that we do its job for at least five years. It also has to keep the wife happy, she likes shiney ****.

Not gone on Kia, but hyundai are good value. Likewise, skoda are not bad. but you won't see Mulcrone in a skoda, would ya?
If you are off piste, a 4x4 is better, but floor is higher, therefore space for bikes is less.
The Ford has served you well, so maybe his big brother?
lastly, I rented one of these in Italy. pleasantly surprised, and cheap as chips (no-one wants them). 3 front seats, so bikes have the back, and spawn gets to sit in the front....

well, the Skodas (and Seats) have generally the same suspension/chassis/engine (the more important bits) as your VW Golf / Audi A3 as the same company owns them (VW group - Skippy will tell you for sure)
If I were you, I'd use your ample influence to get a hold of the CI Skoda estate and take it for a joyride and see how you like it, even if you hated - the young ones in the back seat would surely make it worth the bother...

as a price guide - 19 grand for a 2009 1.9TDi estate from a dealer in Galway, no idea what that translates to in real money (Dublin prices), big ole boot though...
Subaru is the only man in town. They are only new to diesel. First boxer diesel ever. It's incredible 4wd three year warranty goes like the clappers and has sheds of room. Get one from uk and u will be sorted. Read the reviews online. Or the skoda which is a vw/Audi only better as it's half the price.

can't be a jeep style 4x4 most are poxy small on the inside.

There is only one choice - Subaru within that there is the Legacy Estate and The Imprezza Wagon, massive inside, fairly quick, bomb proof, drive over anything, but don't get a diesel.
Mitsubishi Outlander is another option, it's somewhere inbetween a full on 4x4 and an estate. It's got 4wheel drive but it's higher off the ground than a normal car but not quite as tall as a proper 4x4, loads of room in them too and come in a 2l diesel.
Have a Skoda Octavia 5 years from new, nice to drive and never had a minutes bother, 130K and nothing ever went wrong, oh actually the rear washer went in the first few months which Skoda fixed, a design fault. With the rear seats down ye can fit a bike in complete. Go for a diesel though, my petrol is costing too much to run an Ambiente or Elegance spec. The hatchback is bigger than most other estates. 2008 onwards would be nice for cheap tax, come in a 1.6D these days. Them 4*4 Scouts are nice but a bit harder on diesel, quiet rare, Actually for more frills and extras go for the vRS, even in the estate, the latest 2.0L diesels are good, 170bhp and fast\sporty. Great value from the uk. If I had a bit more to spend I would go for the suburu alright (their cool) but the Skoda is best all rounder, value for money and reliability, as good as any vw (actually a vw golf chassis and every part is vw stamped) but they have a very practical image, they are cheap as they are cheaper to start with (like french, korean cars and fiats).
