Anyone considered engraving your telephone number of some other contact info on your bike, under the BB. With a Dremmel tool?
Just wondering if this a good or bad idea? Thieves would grind it off which would be pretty suspicious to any prospective legit buyer, but if recovered with the number still in place you may stand a good chance of getting a call.
I've heard of people putting a piece of paper with their name and number and a note saying if you see this note the bike is stolen inside a zip lock and placed inside the seatpost or inside the handlebars. Somewhere where a bike shop will find it but probably not anyone else.
Engraving sounds like a nice idea but would probably make it annoying to sell on down the road.
Been watching a bit too much CSI there hairoil, I somehow doubt that the Gards will be looking for UV ink, data tags, secret notes stuffed inside seat post, fingerprints or scobie DNA or any other James Bond mumbo jumbo, however they may look for a serial number, and if there is a phone number beside it...
Why would you bother engraving your own serial number when every single bike that is ever produced already has an identification number stamped somewhere on the frame... and I bet you don't know it or have even bothered looking for it...!?!
And if thieves are prepared to file off the official stamped number then your personal engraved message to yourself will be a piece of p!ss to them. Sure they'll probably just spray the whole bike a different colour and cover it in insulating tape anyway..!!
I am well aware on the concept of serial numbers Mr Mac! But how does that help the cops find the owner? I am am sure in some parallel universe we are meant to register bikes with the CIA or someone but who does that? I agree if they grind off the serial number then they will do they same to your phone number though.
As for Dattag, nice idea but do the Gardai here have the required scanners? I wouldn't bet on it.

I would say yes... considering Datatags have been around for a few years now and are used on cars, motorcycles, boats, paintings, ming vases etc.. etc.. etc...
And I'd agree with Hairoil on the UV ink thing as well... when we were broken into last year the cops asked us if we had any of the stolen items chipped or marked with UV ink..
Yep.. but I couldn't be arsed with such nonsense... I just make sure they are all locked up securely each evening..
Ah feck, I was hoping I could etch my phone number on them and leave them outside, back to the drawing board so.
