Commercial Vehicles

Hi
Wondering if anyone knows what the crack is as regards vans, or commercials for private use, was thinking of getting a little van for throwing the bikes into. I know there was a fuss as regards road tax (round 240) for commercials, was the idea that you pay full tax if for private use? Has the whole idea just faded away or is it likely to be enforced in the future?
I've looked into that myself not so long ago and gave up on the idea...here is why:

1. 99% vans /carvans in the country are registered as commercial and therefore cannot be taxed privately
2. If you don't have your own business you can't tax your vehicle commercial
3. If you need to renew the commercial tax on it you might be asked to provide the tax registeration number to the Motor Tax office, if you don't have it you're in trouble
4. You can't transfer your existing insurance from a private to commercial vehicle, you have to start anew
5. You you are not insured to drive other cars with a commercial insurance policy
6. Even if you have your business you shouldn't be using your work vehicle for biking, unless you are somebody like Stewart who has a bike related business etc.
Alan..check it out yourself..I have a Van and I use it for personal use without any of the issues Max has..and I am not alone.
Dont think its as differcult as that

i had a commerical jeep for a while - you needed a DOE cert to tax it commercially or else a NCT cert for taxing it privately.

The insurance on a commercial vehicle is higher than a private vehicle so while you get cheaper tax, you pay more in insurance so running it as private makes sense too

You benefit from buying a commercial vehicle when you have a business as you can claim back the vat on the purchase

You cant claim the vat back on a private vehicle when you buy it for the company nor buy a commercial vehicle when you buy it privately....
Yes, I've outlined the 'worst case scenario' there, sure there are plenty of people driving vans for private use but its worth knowing what the risks are.
Richie, your van is NCT'ed isn't it? I think it was registered as private when new, hence you can tax and use it privately. There are very few carvans like that though...
Another option is buying a non-commercial van, ex. transporter 6 seater and getting rid of the back seats and covering back windows yourself, that's what I plan to do next year.
This has become a real issue recently! My understanding is that you can't tax a vehicle as a commercial anymore without being a registered business. I know this has been a problem for at least two regular Epic riders who might want to chime in here? A lot of the tax offices are insisting on a VAT cert or even a Tax clearance cert!!
As far as I know you now need to produce a company VAT number when taxing a commercial vehicle, this is only a recent thing as I didn't have to do it last year. Andyw had to pay tax on his van going by the cc rather than paying the flat commercial rate, was gonna cost a grandish rather than 270ish!
My jeep might be for sale very soon if I can't get taxed commercially as otherwise it'll cost €1500 a year versus €272!
no I get mine DOEd and last I heard I could still Tax it as a Commercial. So if you now have to Tax it as Private, do you have to get an NCT instead, how does that work then? mines a Carvan..maybe the rules are different..this is Ireland after all !
I've had 3 vans and several hatchbacks..and I have come to the conclusion that an estate is the way to go.
It's feckin daft, think you still have to Doe it rather than Nct it even though they then make you tax it as a private vehicle! An estate or a smaller newer 4x4, 2l diesel etc, 08 onwards is the way to go alright. A Rav4 or Ford Kuga can be gotten in 4x4's and only cost 300ish to tax.
Hi,

For what its worth I only taxed my van a few weeks back, I use my van for both work and for kayak / biking and general outdoor stuff.

I am registered for VAT and a reg business, I went to the motor tax office with all the paper work to prove what not inc my DOE cert. Handed in the renewal from and the cash.

I asked did she want to see the rest of my stuff only to be told nope they don't look to see it and haven't being instructed to do so. She didn't even want to see the DOE cert as it comes up on the "system" when she puts the reg in.

That's my own very recent first hand experience, and have heard similar stories from lots of others I know. The whole social and domestic craic was just scaremongering for the most part.

a reliable source in the 4x4 business says the same..scaremongering created by the green party and people with hairless upper lips ( except women ) and no guns !!
there was never any change to the rules all the said was they would be enforcing them more strictly from now on. So chances are youll get away with it
throw a hi vis vest, note book and measuring tape in the glove box and if you are stoped say you are going to look at a job
