Commute of Doom

Well I didn't fancy a cabin fever day so I said f*ck i'll go to work...
So I saddled up the Reign..threw on a base layer and a winter jacket job, and my Thor baggies over my lycra..couldn't find my overshoes but f*ck it..
I got as far as Dundrum when a Blizzard buried me..so I thought darn it all and decided to turn around..but then it stopped and off I went again got as far as Nutgrove and an even worse Blizzard descended on me so I weighed up in my head, hypothermia and or broken bones would put me out of action for a while so i turned around in to the teeth of the storm..
By the time I got home I couldn't feel my fingers..haven't had that feeling in a while..
The amount of people in cars was horrendous..all having little fish tail manoevers on the hills.
Its the first time I've been given room on the road by cars..the path was too dangerous with fat people wandering aimlessly into my path, with more clothes on than some people have in their wardrobes.
it took me 45 minutes to get to Nutgrove and an hour to get home, some workout !!
On the front I had a 2.5 Bontrager Big Earl..great grip no sideways skidding
On the rear I had a 2.3 completely baldy Maxxis High roller..very skiddy and no grip at all.
I was wearing an ancient pair of Shimano fancy carbon soled race shoes, held together with wood screws and my socks were adidas running socks.
My base layer was a HH lifa job..
My Winter Jacket was a €19 Aldi job ( one of the best pieces of gear I've ever used , ever and I have used some amount of cold weather gear over the years, Alpining and everything ) if they ever come back in to the shops buy one.
I was wearing Canterbury " Cold " tights..another brilliant product.
Thor MX Shorts..my arse never got cold.
Gloves were Altura Night Vision jobs..all good bike shops have them !!
And now I am drinking coffee and watching a Doris day movie with my niece !!
Why didnt you drop into me for a cup of coffee, I would have dropped you home you looney!!!
I was going to then I thought if I stop I will freeze besides, you know me, i love the old adventure I do and I doubt you'd get near my house in a van..besides I was "in the Zone " with the Bloody Beetroots on the Walkman ( damn you Greg Callaghan )
Only my thumbs were actually numb..now my feet they was ok..considering their was a pile of snow on top them the whole time.
Some dozy bint , probably wearing giant D&G Sunglasses decided to turn her Polo around at the top of the hill coming up from Dundrum, near the Church and got stuck , it was hilarious looking at the 4x4 Goobers fishtailing around her..
oh yeah , when I got home and rang Ross, he told me they closed the shop for the day..Imagine my disappointment if I'd gotten there and it was closed.
Disappointment?? Rage more like it or are you going soft?

(Coming from the man snuggled up on his sofa, cuppa tea in hand and afraid to open the front door)
Great story Byrner, excellent detail about your commute specifications. Big Earl you say...

Apparently Bray is a no go so I just made a huge snowman with the kids, I rolled his base around until he could roll no more, great fun. It's an absolute blizzard outside!

Well I kind of thought ..everybody needs a bit of a laugh or inspiration or just read about the travails of a lunatic !
I am going to dig out my old VHS tapes and attempt to load them on to the PC using a peculiar device I got in Lidl..if it works we'll be entertained for a century !!
I left lusk this morning at 6:30 and only got to Sligo at 11, had to stop about five times to clear the windscreen, wipers and washer jets frozen solid. M1, M50 and M4 were cronic I'd hate to have seen the smaller roads.
Since I started this commuting lark , I have learned some valuable lessons..Pedestrians, their children and their pets are the spawn of Mr Magoo. They wander aimlessly out in front of you yakking on about neighbours or The Riordans !!
Cycle paths encourage fat people in Grey tracksuits to bimble along in the throes of agony listening to Michael Bubbly on the ipod.
I swear I am just going to ride over one of them as they collapse flinching in the Bike Lane.
Thats another thing..Bike lanes = equal death by people getting off buses. Who thought that would be a good idea !
So I guess thats pedestrians again.
And I think there really needs to be a new driving test, if your are hardly able to put your shoes on or your teeth in , then you really shouldn't be in charge of a ton of metal filled with liquid explosive , now should you.
oh and number 1 scumbags of the road are Taxi Drivers..on my bucket list is the day I decapitate one of the ignorant , arrogant f*ckers with their roof sign..
just got the measuring stick out, 10 inches so far in Roundwood. I have a terrible temptation to sneak down to the hill billy pubs in the village, you comin Jackson, we'll bring to plastic bags and tell the women we're going up the hill's to slide down!
I rode into from Milltown area into town, not bad but had to take it nice and slowly on the roads and junctions not sure how it will be coming home in the dark..

one question, why do drivers think it's safe to drive on your back wheel in the snow and icy...
i know what you mean lads,
it was a b*stard i got up at eleven and had to go all the way to the kitchen for a cup of tea and a slice of toast,i'm just glad theres no stairs in my gaff!

Ha, hilarious.
and another thing about Commuting fashion that I abhor..some of you do it on spins and I really hate it..its like the ultimate goober badge or a direction sign saying " Hello everybody I'm pure dweeb !!"
Thats the wooly hat under the helmet !! or the fleece hat..I've seen everybody from the mighty Seymour to the lowliest Halford bike riding goobersnipe do it....
I think i'd sooner stay indoors than do it..it offends me to the core of my being and below.
Before you leave the house, have one last look in the mirror ( Andrew, especially, the under the helmet hat and the Homo Erotic tights ) check yourself for fashion faux pas !!

it's better than one of those ice cream headaches, O the pain.
O, I forgot you need a brain to get one of those, so you wouldn't have a clue, would you?
Do you remember the numbskulls cartoon?
without a hat I have those cnuts drilling inside my lovely skull.
