2X10, can someone explain?

As I am considering putting X9 on the Trance maybe I should be giving this a bit more thought.

Exactly what is involved in going 2X10, new block, chainset, front and rear mechs and shifters? Can it be done piecemeal?

And what of the benefits, is it worth it and why?
I have no idea what the hell you are talking about, you nutty designer chap.
If you put 2X10X9 on your bike - do you end up with 180 gears?
You can do it piecemeal by going 2 x 9 first, that would mean a chainset front mech and shifter and keep the rest 9 speed.
You could do the rear mech, shifter and cassette later.
Just stick with 2x9 for now Don.. buy the right chainrings for the front and your done.. for the trance i'd go 26/38 or thereabouts... you can use your original chainset and just convert it to 2 rings.. it will cost you the guts of around €60 all in..

I have 2x10 on the Flash and as far as I'm concerned it makes fook all difference compared to the 2x9 drivetrain that I have on my Rush..

I haven't had an opportunity to try the 10 speed stuff in thick mud yet so I don't know how that will affect shifting.. the only reason I went 2x10 is because I got it for free..!

2x9 or 2x10 is slightly lighter than a 3x set up as your dropping a chainring from the front.. but at the same time you are adding a cog onto the rear wheel..

Until 9 speed is phased out completely (which won't happen for a very long time) I won't be changing.. unless I get more free stuff..!!
So if buying a 9 speed X9 rear mech and shifters now will they work on a 10 speed block down the line???

Oh my head....
Ok so either embrace 2X10 at great cost, or get the X9, cobble together 2 rings on the front, keep the existing front mech and that's it.

By the way, what does one gain by loosing the granny and going to 2 rings? Bear in mind I couldn't give a fiddlers about weight.
Thats funny i'm looking at doing exactly the same thing! This X9 would look great on my Trance Advanced, also discovered something interesting today, I found the chainset on a German website at over a hundred euro cheaper than CRC so i posted the link into their pricematch feature and i got an email back in 5 minutes agreeing to the lower price! and the best part is they are free shipping so €10 evan cheaper than the German website! All I can say is there must be some serious mark up on this stuff!
Actually ive just read the rest of this post seeing as ive just bought new xtr bearings and i'm broke i might just try converting the xt (m770) Has anyone here done it? Which rings do you replace remove? Can the shifter (triple) work with two rings? Hmmn interesting.

Your not really dropping the granny... I mean if your changing from a 24t to a 26t then its not much of a difference... if anything your loosing the middle ring...

Morgan is right about the shifter... you can use the same 3 speed front shifter on a 2x setup.. just adjust the limit screws on the mech.. and like Joe said, lower it to suit the front c-ring..

Its easy peesy to change to a 2x9 drivetrain... Joe's idea is best and cheapest.. just change your two front rings on your standard 3x chainset..
