I only know one person who has a 29'er,and thats everyone's favourite BMX'er, Eamonn. Now as he's someone who can throw around a bike, I respect his opinion. And he has told me that the 29'er is good on open trials, but when it get gets tight and twisty they are no good at all.So rule out the club course for a start!!Plus the extra weight must hinder uphill climbing as well???So maybe the 26'er is safe enough for most of the Irish trails!!
As you know wheels size does not matter one inch to me, but don't dismiss the 29er just because it looks goofy, I got one on the cycle to work scheme as I wanted a cross bike to use on the road (couldn’t use a road bike) Mick Jordan talked me into it and I’ve had one for 2 years or so now and have nearly sold it a few times but the main reason I kept it was its performance in the snow.
It's seriously good in bad conditions like mud & snow, generally it rolls better over moderately rocky stuff and its real good on techy climbs and rooty sections. The Club Course is ideal. Where I don't like it and what really annoys me about 29ers is going down steep hills like bag of chips and ewoks and some of those drop ins on 3 rock the head angle is too steep and can fire you over the bars. But once you know that you keep your arse way back. Also it cycles like a bit of a barge on long steep fire road climbs.
In my view XC race courses are ideal for this type of bike , big mountain rides - maybe not, craic spins -no.
Horses for courses it's just another bike. There are more offensive things out there such as why does a MTB cost 2K+ in the first place? Why does the cycle to work scheme have a 5 year limit - don't they know I need a new bike every year? White Lycra! Trails made from Hardcore, motorists, Enda Kenny, hip injuries etc...
It’s a bit like a mohito - don't knock it till you try it, some of you will do better on one some of you won’t. But they are coming……and you can’t stop it, they’ll just roll over ya. Wagons Wheels ! Anyone want to buy one ?
I suppose if you must, Lady Dixon's probably not a bad place to try it!!
well i have a quandary..I could do the S4 race and document the other race..but I would be abused. Unless I can handicap myself in such a way thats both entertaining and fair !!
They're good in snow (which we get a lot of here in Ireland) techy climbs, muck and moderate rocks..
But they're no good on tight, technical or steep stuff (all the fun, challenging & interesting stuff)..... tends to fire you over the bars.. cycles like a barge on long steep climbs.. etc.. etc..
Wow.. they sound great.. I'm convinced.. I need one like a hole in the head.. so where can I buy one..

I've a much better idea ...... ride the Club Race next week on it!
