The National Road Race champs in Omagh, Co Tyrone was a superb event professionally organised by local cub Omagh Wheelers.
There were over 120 riders in the Masters 40 category and we completed 115km at a really fast 42kph.
It was 5 laps of an undulating course that took us through the town centre on each lap, this made for a great atmosphere from all the supporters and the bemused saturday shoppers in town.
The course was quite technical with lots of fast bends, twisty bridges and there was a 90 degree left hander to negotiate 75m from the finish.
It didnt have any real tough climbs so I had hoped to make it into a break and escape the strong sprinters who were all hanging in and conserving energy for a final sprint finish.
I managed to get into two separate breaks, one with 5 quality A1s which I thought might stick but each time we were chased down and caught by the peleton.
The pace was relentless and I was amazed at the strength and ability of the top riders to stay right at the front all day and continue to make attack after attack.
After my efforts to get away my legs were hanging on the last lap but I knew I had to be positioned in at least the top 10 before we hit the last left turn on the approach to the finish line.
With 3k to go the strong men started to drive it on and I fought my way into the lead group, tried to keep my speed up on the final turn but when I reached for the gas on the final gallop to the line the tank was empty!
It was a superb race and another valuable lesson in road racing.
