Some of you know I give a hand with the web stuff here but I've also being helping Graham out with re writing a solution for automating the handicap system for start times. That part now works well and does it all automagicly.
However the software we use for timing is utter junk, it's not user friendly and is overly complicated. In fairness it has done a great job up to now but it is on the go since 2001 so time (pun not intended) to upgrade to something quick and easy. Few of use would settle for a junker out of date badly maintained bike so why should the club league be any different.
I have a solution but I need a little info from you all and those who might be going the timing.
Do you use a smart phone?
What operating system and release do you use? As in iPhone IOS 4, Android ice cream sandwich, Windows Phone Mango etc
What is 3G coverage like on all of the networks like in Leadmines where we start / finish races.
The more feedback and the quicker I get it will sort this issue very quickly.
Hey... As Adrian has said, we need to replace the dinosaur of a timing software we have been using for a while now, so anyone in the club who has a Smartphone could post up the make/model of there phone please?
I know Gary K had his Android phone at the start finish with the starting times on it.. Saves having a pen and paper for one.... If we could do the same with the timing software it would save having to sit around with a laptop also...
Edit: Will also mean that race times/lap times and positions could be up on the forum in minutes and be 100% accurate..
Don't know about the 3g Coverage in Leadmines, I am with Vodafone. Have done a lap with Strava on the Club Course and worked, don't know if it's anyhow related with the 3g
Iv an I phone 4 s the coverage is ok most times the only issue I have is the battery you would have to make sure it's fully charged before a race now the 3G can come and go when up the hills didn't check in the leadmines yet will have a look next time , was looking at that app you put a post up a few days ago about looks good and is 19.99 euro for IPhone ..
HI guys. Mines an Android Sony Xperia S running version 2.3.7, build number 6.0.a.3.73 whether its Ice cream sandwich or gingerbread or deep fried mars bar I really cant say but now I'm keen for second breakfast!
Signal not bad in leadmines, map-my-ride app usually picks up the route, not tried the Strava app there yet.

Would everyone have to have there phones with them, or just the timers? If just the timers would they be using their own phones or some else's (not a good idea). The thought of typing in numbers or anything else on a modern Smartphone is fraught with problems, never mind in the rain and cold.
