Like many others he gave me my first introduction to MTB but scared the be jaysus out of me with his focus on training and racing etc, so I joined a different club...

Shocked and saddened to hear this. Thoughts go out to Carol and Sophie . RIP
Terrible news.... I only heard just how sick he really was at the weekend. Just like most of the Epic crew I was taken in under his unique style of coaching and encouragement. I am sure he is responsible for more friendships that most of us even realise..He was a crazy nutter and I am glad to have known him.

If it hadn't been for Richie and Carol and their encouragement on their women's spins last year, I would probably have ditched the mountain bike. A lot of laughs were had. I will miss Richie's heckling at the cross races, always one of the highlights.
Very sad news. Well he certainly lived his life to the full and was always out on the bike giving more and more people the gift and joys of mountain biking.
A real legend, no doubt about it.
I joined Epic because of him back in 2012 when he was doing the beginner spins. RIP.

Cant get my head around it at all......so hard to comprehend that nobody will see him again. I met him originally at a ladies coaching spin he ran in Djouce. He made me go to the club league the following week. That's how myself and Alfie met.
Such a loss to everyone. A lovable rogue. A Nazi leader with a heart of gold........you wont come across another Richie Byrne in your lifetime that's for sure.

I'm very appreciative for all Richie done for me since rocking up to a beginners into spin in my football gear in 2012 (I think). Since then Richie has pushed me on with his energy, motivation and support and completely changed me from a part timer doing laps of Ballinstoe to enjoy the best of what the Dublin/ Wicklow Mountains has to offer and clashing bars in races around the country. Always loved his forum/ Facebook/ blog reports and his enthusiasm at events and spins. I hope the trail are dusty dry on the other side. RIP.

I first met Richie back in i'd say 1992, when he was part of Original M.A.D , and he used to run a few spins, always had a funny story to tell, and went on to form the South Dublin Mountain bike association(SDMBA).
I remember they ran a race from Maulin Carpark, up Ride Rock and back down, he made us (from MAD) start at the back, but I worked my way up the field, I came in to finish 2nd after he told me to get on my bike for the last climb or i'd be DQ'd! He had a way of motivating people that's for sure!
Fast forward to 2010, I went on my first proper MTB spin with EPIC, and there was the same guy again, Richie Byrne 20 years later, running the spins and still going strong on the bike, we certainly had our up's and downs in the club and clashed many times, but I think his unique way of motivating people always remained the same!
Everyone in the club will miss him...
