I've been looking at this format for a long time. personally I think its the future for racing. no uplift worries.
No vomit climbs.
4 stages.
I think we'll have a 2 section test event some sunday in Cloon.
opinions please .. http://www.dirtmag.co.uk/news/catego...t-1231472.html

sounds really good. I saw the same thing on one of the extream TV channels. lots of places we ride would make for a good event. 3rock and the leadmines and cloon would have lots of stages but the problem would the timing. but i think that could be easliy sorted.
all depends on what you gauge a "sensible" amount of time would be to get back up to the start, too long and the DH'ers would murder the XC heads, too short and the skinny carbonisers will rule the day, get it just right and it'd be a killer event....like a load of Dixie Dashes all in the one day..yes please
the result is based on the cumulative time of the downhill/freeride sections. Not the linking sections. with time penalties for missing your starts .everybody signs on Saturday or online, theres no practice. Full facers are not compulsory.
It is a good system and it works well in enduro alright but the social end of it is crap, really crap.
You don't get the buzz we do at the racing as your alone for most of it.. and your not getting your friends/foe racing along side which is much more fun in my humble opinion.
You cant beat racing along with your nemesis in sight with the a red head of death on him and your reeling him in at speed.. its just deadly.
Who doesnt like counting scalps.
Now it has a few good points such as.. no hold ups at the first bend and it gives the tech rider as much a chance as the roadie because the roadie tends eats the start climb but tends to fooook it up at the first sign of a wooden bridge without gradeA chicken wire. Now the hairy legged mtbr at this stage is in full flight and has reeled the roadie in after the fire roadclimb.
its not for Roadies or xc riders..its for people on 6" travel machines. the sections are designed not to be full on DH but not XC either. Think about it a bit more..its like having an all day downhill without the hassle or tedium of waiting for uplifts.
Theres also no sneaky practicing so its fairer.
Looks class. It could be done over a few different venues over a few days too, make a league of sorts, one session in the leadmines, one in cloon etc. etc., with a total time at the end.
you could do that as a club event but not as an open one.
No permissions or indemnity...but I think we might do the old team Worc Endurance weekend
Friday night Downhill
Saturday HillClimb
Sunday Point to point
We used to do Downhill off Kippure
Hillclimb from Bray Dart Station up the road to the top of Kippure
Point to Point Gala shop to Djouce River valley
I would suggest DH off 3 rock
HillClimb - not sure..I considered maulin but too busy around there at the weekend brockagh maybe
Point to point - Shop to Djouce river valley
Suggestions !!
you could avoid the boneshaker (if it was a concern) on 3 rock:
with the various sections (new and old) from halfway up fairy to the gate down at the top of Stepaside hill is 98% single track/rocky trail, pretty much DH the whole way, I had a load of potential routes from the Dixie, let me know if you want a few maps...
I like the first idea, its like a spin, but itâs a race, deadly. They do have practice, but its only on the Saturday and there are seven 3 minute runs, it takes elites 4 hours to race it, so practice is really just riding the whole course once at your leisure. Then Race the next day. The courses are not out and out DH, they do have pedalling bits and short climbs etc, so even DHers wonât use big rigs. The time given to get to the next section is manageable by all, but you wound have to ride it to make it. Riders could quite happily do it in groups of 4 or 5, just wait for you mate at the bottom of the descents and ride together to the next. We could easily do a club one ourselves, maybe with invites etc, Djouce is the first place that springs to mind, you could have half a dosen runs easily. Issue is the timing, but for this type of thing it does not need to be the split second stuff used for DH, lads with watches would do fine. To cut down on the number of time keeps you could have common start / finish areas, and time it in such a way that same timekeepers could do a couple. For example with Djouce, you could have two start areas, middle carpark and the top of the red road, each with two or tree runs leading to one finish area, the river crossing down near powerscourt. It would be deadly altogether.
On the second idea, I have done lots of these over the years, even open events with that formula. You can do the DH and the Hill climb on the same hill on the same day, if you want. Its not much crack though, its racing out and out. You have to either make people do it all on the same bike and weigh the timing when you are coming up with the overall results. Or let people use different bikes. Without weighting, to do all on the one bike (if you want to be competitive) is no crack at all (unless you only have the one bike). For example I have an xc bike an all mountain bike and a DH bike. If I was taking it seriously and could only use one it would have to be the xc bike, but would be no fun at all, misery altogether. But the seconds Iâd lose on the DH bits would be more than made up for by the minutes Iâd make on the climbs. If you weigt it so as you get more time or points in different events then people might be more inclined to use more of an all round bike. Plus makes it a bit fairer to those who only have the one machine (poor sods). You would probably also need to define the route for the point to point race, or at least put in checkpoints you have to go through, otherwise those who know there way around could skip loads of the bits we normally would do for the crack.
yeah I prefer idea 1 for an open event, but idea 2 as a club event ran as a team, might be interesting as a bity of craic.
I'll organise a test of idea 1 in Djouce after our NPS, in July maybe..for the craic. We can invite other clubs and see how it goes
