Myself and Niamh are planning to head to the Roc this year. Any tips on which races to enter? From what I gather, deffo the Roc Light (24km/400m) and the Roc D’Azur (50km/1100m).
Should we enter any others or would that be enough? Think those races are on the Thursday and the Sunday (going by the 2021 schedule).
We’re hoping to fly in on Tuesday 4th and home Monday 10th Oct. Accommodation booked in the center of Frejus. Anyone else heading?
Well I'll be there.
We always did the masters and the marathon. As well as the Sunday. The marathon is fantastic if you have trained enough. One year it almost broke me and another I lashed into it. It's a fantastic loop.
I'm planning on going back again, great to hear more people also coming. Its a great event to be part of.
Based on what I learned last year, for me the first question is whether or not you're doing the marathon. If yes then the short 24km Thursday Race , Marathon Friday, 50km Sunday is a good combination.
If not doing the marathon then maybe a longer one on Thursday - I did the 33km /1100m climbing one but there's also a 40km one - might but worth considering. The 24km is pretty short with one climb and it's over quickly enough. You could do that on Saturday instead as they run it Thursday and Saturday. then the 50km Sunday.
The marathon is a serious test but amazing to do if you've done the training as Terry said.
I don't think I'd be up for the marathon race! Sounds too much like hard work.
Looking at the race info, the other race on the same day as the roc lite (thurs) is the Mid Roc which might be the one Glenn is talking about (33km/655m climbing). Described as a shorter version of the masters race and harder than the lite! So maybe I'll go for that one with the roc dazur on the Sunday.
There's also the masters race on the Thursday which is the 40km Glenn mentioned I think but you have to have a DOB of before 1991 for that, so that rules it out for me!
So maybe
Thursday - roc mid 33km/655m
Saturday roc lite 24km/370
Sunday roc dazur 50km/1140m
I can see on the Thursday there is the mid Roc 33km / 655m and also the Roc Trophy 2 33km /1050m
I did the trophy 2 and it's a great race but not sure if you can enter that on its own without entering the full Roc 5 race series. I guess you can check when registration is fully open. If that's an option I would do it has some of the best descents of any of the races and you'd handle them no problem. It has a different start location however which we copped only late the evening before!
Yeah I saw that race starts about a 40 min cycle from where we are staying, so will wait and see what comes up on the schedule but I'm sure we'll have plenty to do!
The Mid Roc is good Sarah - I previously did the Roc Light on the Thursday, Mid Roc on the Friday and then the main Roc on the Sunday - but they have the Light and the Mid Roc at the same day and time now . The Roc Trophy on the Thursday does start in a completely different location (so its about a 40 minute cycle from Frejus). Pity about the Masters as that has the Fournel in it which is class (but you'll do that on the Sunday anyhow)
I'm doing the Masters Roc on the Thursday and the main Roc on the Sunday .
I'm thinking of going this year. What accomodation to people stay in? Would be good to stay in same hotels etc for the buzz. Also if anyone sees especially cheap flights going, perhaps post here!
Im driving in the camper and staying in the campsite (camping St.Aygulf)
beside the hotel we used to always stay in. Van der Valk hotel St.Aygulf. So either of those as an option. I think you can get a mobile home for 4 people for about €500 up in the campsite for week.
Sarah has an air bnb in town. Not sure about Tara and Dave
Yeah we've an air Bnb in Frejus. Way more reasonable than a hotel.
In terms of flights we're flying aer lingus. Flights worked out around €270 per person including bike and sharing a suitcase. We plan to take the train from the airport to Frejus.
