It depends on the resources of your machine...
I've been crunching away video's with the h.264 codec on my Vista equipped PC without any problems.. 3gigs of ram and a dual core processor takes care of it easily...
And even when you get it edited and finalised the hosting site will usually compress it in some way.. so it will never look as good as it does in the raw..
Try editing raw HD 1920x1080px (1min = 300MB of data) 30 fps with 48kHz uncompressed audio... trust me it's painful on a PC without special codecs that cost a fair bit of money.
I'm using dual core 3GHz cpu with 4GB of RAM and 2x500GB disks in RAID and I'm getting 1 frame per 3sek in Sony Vegas and it crashes after editing 3-4min of video.....
The problem is the video feature in my camera was designed with Apple users in mind so it works fine on them
instead of editing the raw HD Maxy, why don't you scale it down to something more manageable, then do the edit?
It depends on how/where you intend showing the finished product, if it's web based then you can scale it back a fair bit with minimal quality loss.
If on the other hand - you want it crystal clear on a big HD telly or you are making a DVD, then that's a different matter, but I'm guessing you want to show it on the web, something like Vimeo?
The DH Nationals video I did was 334MB for a duration of 7:33mins at a resolution of 1280 * 720.
The raw footage was recorded at 1280 * 720 and this was the resolution I edited at and uploaded to Vimeo at, on a PC with pretty much exact same spec as yours
So I'd suggest scaling your raw clips down to 1280 * 720 for a start and try editing from there
I'm just editing the original raw .MOV (h264) files directly using NCH Videopad (cheap and cheerful video editing software) and then saving the final movie down into a .WMV format.. I keep the frame rate of the original recorded video and compress it down to a preset called 'YouTube HQ wide' - which is about the the same as 720HD.. I also compress the sound files (if any) to about 64kbps, constant bit rate, to keep the overall size of the video file to a minimum.. Sound isn't that important to me anyway.. as long as the video is good that's all I care about..
Works every time without any problems.. no scaling down.. no video conversions or the likes...
