The actions of a few....

per email segment below, this is the first incident of possibly more to come

I have locked the thread on MAD because this guy started saying some very stupid things, but it goes to show what we are up against.

It would be great if you all could help politely educate any persons you see walking on the new Coillte 3Rock trails of the huge potential for very serious injury to all involved if one of us were to collide with some walker, or a family and kids.

Officially, this new trail is not yet open, and there is no signage warning the public that it's an MTB specific trail
but
there's currently nothing stopping anyone going down or up it

I'll give Coillte a ring tomorrow and alert them to the problem - it needs to be fixed asap or the whole thing will get shut down, and that certainly would not be very rad at all.....

You may feel that that's not appropriate and I realise I have no recourse as it’s a private site, yet I feel that what I have to say might be of interest to you and the users of MAD forums.

Firstly, I wish to make it clear that I came upon your site through a “Google” search and it is quite possible that the people involved may not be members, but they still fly the flag as it were, of mountain biking.

Yesterday, Sunday 3rd Jan 2010 I went for a walk up 3 Rock with my family. It’s an area we are very familiar with and walk quite often. We don’t tend to follow the Tarmac road to the top, preferring instead to take a variety of tracks surrounding the mountain. We were surprised to see a new track had been laid half way up the mountain, and although there were no signposts we assumed it was part of the new Dublin Mountain’s Way. The banked turns were a giveaway though and we thought maybe that TORC had been successful in petitioning Coilte for a MX trail.
What happened about a hundred metres from the summit surprised and annoyed me.
The first of a group of bikers, all dressed in MTB gear, left the top and screamed at me in passing (myself and my family had stepped well off the track to let him by), telling me to “**** off...this is a private track, you have no business here”.
The next 5 or 6 riders, all male bar one female, and all in their 20’s or 30’s followed suit, hurling abuse at us as they passed.
“Did you not see the ****ing signs”
“You’ve no ****ing right to be on this track”
etc etc
I admit to being startled, yet I held my tongue. I made the mistake of ignoring one of the riders. He stopped and made to get off his bike, presumably to amble back up and give me another piece of his mind, or worse. The girl seemed to calm him down by saying “It’s not worth it, leave the stupid ****s alone.”
At the top we checked. No signs were in place.

To put this in perspective Conor, I am absolutely not anti MTB. You have a right to use the mountain just as hillwalkers have. Most MTB’ers are quite friendly and will pull out of the way if they see hillwalkers coming up a hill, with a cheery wave while they pass on their way. We can all live together. However unless Coillte put a fence around that track and forbid walkers entry, I will continue to use it.
I’ll have the sense to have a camera at hand the next time though and lodge a complaint with the Gardai Siochana and Coillte if myself and my family are ever abused in this way again. A copy of this email will be forwarded to Coillte with a complaint about the actions of these people, while on Coillte property.

It’s a sad day when people who enjoy the great outdoors, as we all seem to, should find it so easy to abuse other people who are only out for a quiet walk in such a wonderful location.

thats deadly sh1t, hes obviously a header..hes gone on record there as stating hes going to use it anyway, regardless of the consequences.
I met a guy in it last week strolling up it and I said to him to be wary that it actually a Downhill MTB trail ( try explaining XC to the unwashed)and that there would be lads tearing down it in groups..he was surprised, he thought it was a walking trail ! and he didn't come on to it from the car park..he just saw it through the trees as he was walking up the road.
you can only imagine what its going to be like up there when the weather improves !!!
And there are some complete d1ckheads around on bikes too..

I was talking with the Coillte project manager today.

In short, the trail cannot be permanently signposted until it is fully completed and signed off by the Coillte insurers.
All the contractors signs they have put up (over 20 of them) have been stolen by some idiots - stupid carry on

So - in the short term we will likely have occurrences of people wandering onto this trail.
Coillte ask that we do our best to:

• stay off the trails and advise other bikers to stay off (not too realistic)
• help educate anyone walking on it of the dangers (more realistic)

The whole project, including the new section out Ballyedmonduff, is targetted for completion by the end of Feb.
The only risk to this timeline is more snow, because they are now building above the treeline, which is exposed to snow - and they cannot dig in snow as they cannot see the ground/contours.

Sean 'berm-hucker' Herlihy and I will also likely be meeting with Coillte and reviewing the trails to advise where some tweaks/corrections will be needed.

Finally, I've also be talking with Coillte re; creation of an official action plan and training & insurance for MADMTB to assume responsibility for maintenance of these trails so that the trails do not fall into poor condition (like sections of B'stoe have) and they are keen for this to happen which is good news.

why would you steal the signs..people are mental !! your mans attitude is hilarious. Theres no way people are not going to ride it now. Of course we will advise our members not to but the great unwashed pagans will think that its great that some eejits built the trail just for them.
Education is the way to go. You can't tell people they can't walk up it !! you just have to advise them its not a good idea !! To be honest it must be a crap walk !! The Tarmac road is way better for views and comfort...then again the call of the wild must be strong in these folks !

a 'FRIEND' of mine was riding it yesterday and encountered at least fifteen people in diferent groups walking up it.
lets face it for walkers it starts in the carpark and brings you on a lovely meandering walk right up to the masts.

and whats the story with you fergal? we havent seen you on an epic spin since summer 2010 before that we were sick of the sight of you....have you joined mad or something?

Wherever you meet walkers... even if it is on 'specific' bike trails... even if it is on bike trails that you built with your own bare hands..

Just be nice...!

Even if they are the most ignorant, arrogant, obnoxious w@nkers.... just be nice...! Don't give them the satisfaction by squaring up to them... When they are spitting fire and giving out the (only) best thing to do is stop, give them a big smile, a wave and bid them a good day...!
