Dr Maximus Skills Clinic - Slashes Church 9:30am Sunday 11th

Well here we go again, but different.

So you can't go exploring mountain ranges (Covid), trails are busy with walkers, trails are mucky and slow...

You can ride the same trails as always, same speed, making the same errors along the way in the same places (but never actually adress any issues because you're chasing the spin leader)

You can become a park rat in the GAP

Or

You can challange yourself to improve, learn that wheelie (like me), get better at your trail craft, use the winter time to stop at the tricky bits and repeat them until you get it.

Riders on social media make it look easy and everyone goes... oh those talented c**ts. Well, talent has ZERO to do with it, it's all about time spent practicing, repetition and hard work.

Anyway

If that sounds like something you'd be into, please join me on my spins (sessions or whatever you will call them).

Any level will benefit however I need to be challanged as well so it is probably more suited to experienced riders. Having said that, I'm not planning on doing stupid stuff or bullying anyone to try things beyond their confort zone (maybe a bit).

Any bike is fine but I would recommend flat pedals and proper shoes if you want to make the most of it. Wear knee pads and dress warmer than usual.

Dr Maximus, that could be just what I need. I can’t make tomorrow but Ill keep an eye out for any possible future clinics.
I interested in this Max. I found your last skills clinics really helpful. Should be ok for tomorrow. Just one question- where is Slashes Church??

Great idea Max, find it tough to get motivated to do skills by myself. Can't make it this week but keen to give it a go.
Cheers Max very beneficial today , I was expecting to have some falls as i wanted to push myself outside my comfort zone . Definitely a challenge doing the jump into the bomb hole on a hardtail, i was trying to get more air on my last jump i wasn't set up right going into the jump and ended in disaster, no damage done so all good. Cheers lads these sessions are great. See you at the next one .

Yeah that went very well, thanks all!

What we worked on:

- trail reading and line choice over a mossy rock garden in Barneys
- flowing through turns without breaking, leaning the bike and loading the front suspension (section 3 of the Club Course)
- bunny hopping across a set of roots on section 3
- more bunny hopping practice before progressing to a jump-into-bombhole section of Barneys
- cornering through a catch-berm with some jumping for good measure in Barneys
- tricky step up over a log/rock at the top of Barneys

Basically it all comes down to 3 basic and absolutely essencial skills:

- proper bunny hop techinque
- correct weight distrubition on the bike
- bike / body separation (moving forward and back, closer and further away from the bars, leaning the bike in conders)

I would highly recommend using flats for these sessions, it will help you to understand what's happening between you and the bike and learn the proper technique. If you do decide to go that route make sure you buy a flat specific shoe (like 5ten) and good pedals (composite are great and not expensive)

Next session next weekend hopefully, weather permiting (only doing these in the dry weather
