Just a question for those who might know more than myself.
In all seriousness is there that much difference aside from minimal weight when it comes to MTB cassettes and can the average joe biker really tell the difference?
If you take Shimano as an example, I just used crc prices as they are to hand all 9 speed.
Deore - €21
SLX - €46
XT - €60
XTR - €144
The prices don't matter its more to demonstrate the difference between them price wise.
So come on the tech experts what's the difference in performance to the average weekend warrior mountain biker?
Can many people actually claim they can tell the difference in performance?
mother of sweet jesus,,I have only ever replaced Cassettes with XT..if I actually owned a bike with XTR I guess I'd replace it with an XTR Cassette ..
but when it comes to it..
a straight mech, Hanger,clean cables are far more important than the cassette.
I have noticed that anything below XT is muck. They don't seem to last as long.
But as I am a fulltime rider I can't speak for the rest of you that only go out when you're let !
Personally I find that SRAM cassettes/chains are much better than Shimano ones! Used to find XT cassettes really clunky and swopped to SRAM PG990 which work much better and look bling too!
yeah..its a fact, old ladies use SRAM cassettes..the rest of us real men, use XT..or XTR if we have bags of money..how the fook would you know if it shifted clunky..sure all you do is shift it all the way down in to the granny on the front and all the way up to the dinnerplate on the back ! you must go through a cassette once every 5 years !
I always go for that one Richard linked to, have found them below â¬50 a few times
Heavy/cheap cassettes appear to bite into freewheel bodies (the lighter ones anyway) I've noticed before - leaving small gouges in them and making them a hooer to remove
Nobody does as much shifting up and down the gears as I do - more down than up! And sure you're always boasting that you never move from big in the front and small on the back so how would you know how it shifts! I've ridden your bikes and it's a wonder you can change gear at all .... !

Sram vs Shamino arguements aside I was half serious looking to see was there any real world difference to the likes of me. I'm not very good and yea I use the granny ring far too often.
I need a new cassette and the bike currently has an XT cassette so I was just going to replace like for like but I'm not sure it will make any difference to me.
As you said Richie am I best off getting the likes of an SLX cassette and spending some wedge replacing the rear mech I managed to make a mess off a couple of weeks ago?

what are you gicking on about..I often use the middle ring and the other ones in the middle on the back. Anyway I dont care..I'm watching Micky Mouse on the telly with a 3 year old..a man could go mad !!!
all messing aside..you have to replace everything..chain, cassette , middle ring.
More than one exceptional mechanic has told me over the years that the shifters are the key.
But dont mix your bits, however..
I will admit quite happily that SRAM chains and Cassettes work the best..its the horrible mechs and shifters that I despise !!
