i would like to buy a bike as soon as possible. basically i'm looking for a bike for the roads, but one that can go off road (hills and woods) as well. a hardtail. would also like it to be light. open to offers, but wouldnt be paying over €400 for it.

this is a Hardcore MTB Club forum..your question is a mental one..you want a bike that goes on the road as well as into forests and hills..
A road bike goes on the road..
a mountainbike goes into the forests and the mountains..
you can also ride it on the road if the mood takes you..
a cx bike does not go up hills..it skids round corners in parks and is a horrible thing to carry when you have to..
you can ride it on the road too...i do but it sucks...
you can ride whatever bike you like, but you would be better going to a bike shop and asking them..
there are things called hybrids....
some clever ****head invented them to make more money...
they are the worst of both worlds..

sorry for the kind of vague question, i might as well thrown in a pair of jet powered handlbars for good measure.

i've been looking at bikes since i decided to start, and with so much choice out there i was recomended this site to maybe find someone selling one of theirs.

i want a bike suitable for mostly roads yes, but i'd like to be able to do some light off roading on it. be it after a change of tires or not. i've been told to go for a hardtail, no need for disc brakes, and maybe have the option of changing the tires.

i'm thinking something like this:

I think what the lad wants is a cheap enough bike for getting from A to B along the roads, but when he wants to get a bit saucey something that can handle a bit of off road action. A weekend warrior if you will.
