road tyres

what do u guys recommend
smithers mentioned swalbe, but not sure which type.
I use the gator skins by continental and get a few punctures so
advice please.

conti all the way the gatorskins are good for the punctures. The schwalbes seem to perform better as far as low rolling resistance etc but the contis are more reliable. If you dont care about performance and all u want is to never have to stop when ur on a training ride, then bontrager hard cases are the job. Similar puncture protection to a specialized armadilo but they dont make for a horrible ride.

how about some nice turbo trainer tyres..great on the road, very black , low rolling resistance and i will throw in a biro !

I have Michellin Krylion Carbons on the training bike and they've been great! Fast rolling and only one puncture in over a year (when I rode straight into a 6" hole) - I got them from Richie - maybe he has some in stock still?
The most important thing to avoid punctures on the road is to pump the tyres up very hard before every ride - I go 115psi front and back - definately 100psi +

Probably a stupid question but how do you know when road tyres are worn out? The Krylions are covered in little nicks (they've been there more or less since the start!) but they seem to grip fine and as I say not puncturing (probably get 2 tonight!). Hard to know whether to replace them?

I have them..they are in a box that says " training Tyre" but they are definitely Krylions...
only messing..I have loads of tyres..Terry I was going to sort a "friend" out with tyres as a present for you but I think he may be still in bed kissing his "friend" Peter up in Wicklow !

Switched to Panaracer RibMo's for winter commute this year. Good grip and puncture resistance but a little more rolling resistance even when pumped to 120. A Good tyre.

Vittoria Rubino are a very good tyre. They are quite cheap and I have found them to be a very good tyre. They are very popular and seem to perform very well. I had Specialized armadillo and found that even though they do provide a good puncture protection you don't get much grip.

I would rate the Vittoria higher in puncture protection than the Gator's but the GP4000 are also a very good tyre but are expensive.

For racing or fast road spins: Michelin Pro Race 3
For commuting most of the year round: Panaracer Ribmo - good puncture protection
For riding through glass strewn industrial estates: Schwalbe marathon Plus
For riding on Ice: Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus

If you are just a fair weather non commuting cyclist get the Michelins or Continental GP4000's
