Recommend a Good Hard Tail for starting.

A mates applied for the cycle to work scheme to get a Hard Tail starter bike

It would be nice to have

A light XC style / trail bike

Disc Brakes

At least a 120mm Front Fork Travel
with some sort of lockout or hard firm option

His max spend is a 1000

If someone could make a suggestion of a make and model as my heads starting to hurt trying to narrow something down
for him.

the reason you aren't being swamped by answeres is it's not possible to put your name to or stand over any hard tail you could get new at that price. Unfortunately you'll only get rubbish that will not last a wet week. He either needs to have a realistic budget or look at second hand. The bikes that Batser or the one i have up are great value and both have decent spec. Either steer him down the second hand route or tell him to double his budget is my advise. Unfortunately more than most sports the rule you buy cheap you buy twice applies,

Had a chat with him the most he'd go to would be 1000 on the cycle to work scheme

I reckon a Rockhopper Comp from cycleways for around 800 has most of what he'd needs I don't know anyone who has one but the spec seems alright

If someone could come up with better suggestion that'd be great.
