Well after 7years my magic mavic 717's are on their last legs, buckled, dinged, bent and re-trued to the point of madness and it's time they were put out to stud.
So whats does a fat lad who likes to go down things, wants to get better going up things replace them with in terms of a decent all rounder without adding more weight to the equation?
Everyone seems to be on ztr crests, but methinks the arch ex might be sturdier for me.
Then there's the American classic mtb tubeless with its rolling billboard bling factor
Or do I stick with the old faithfull and get the new 717's
Crests have an 86kg rider weight limit, but are great all rounders. The 717's are fairly narrow so are good for smaller tyres, may be issues mounting tyres.
The American Classics have a good wide profile, and are like Ztr Alpine rims, solidly built onto silky smooth hubs...
I have Crest on the race bike and Flows on the AM bike. Have had zero issues with either. The Flows have also proved more sturdy than my previous 819's.
For your robust riding Gary I would go with the Flows or talk to Alfie about the Classics.
Drop into Alfie, he has some fantastic new American Classic wheels at fantastic prices and weights that are slightly lower than crest/hope! He's the main supplier in Ireland!
Bob Seymour is ridding the ultra high end ones. I bought a pair of the AM Tubless (1,590 grams) for the Mojo and XC Tubless (1,486 grams) for my Cotic and they are fantastic. The recommended rider weight allowance is much higher too than Crest etc! important for 'larger' riders!
Thanks guys, confirming my fears re the crests 10kg over the weight limit so won't be pretty coming down the track on them! looks like it's the arch ex, flow or AC's.

the 819 is the rim of the Irish rider, all the others are pretenders..i don't know what they weigh or even how many spokes they have..I somehow managed to ride up Camaderry , down again and then did a hour of POW in Djouce on the way home today..on a bike with 819 rims on..amazing, i once fix a crack in a 819 with Duct tape, its still holding air, the same crash would have totalled lesser , mincer type of rim..the 819 RTim would survive prison its that hardcore a rim..
