I need to replace my cranks pretty much straight away, I eventually want to go full 10 speed but don't want to buy a full chain set straight away. Can I swap out my current 9 speed busted cranks and replace with 10 speed cranks?
Alliteratively has any one got some newish 9 speed XT cranks for sale at an okay price?
If its any use Adrian I have a 10spd double chain set, 175mm arms, 11-36 cassette and chain, rear mech, all 10spd M985 xtr for sale for €360. All you need then is a 10spd shifter
while you can work out with maths how 2 x 10 is deadly but from what I can see riding with dozens of people of all standards, unless you are a competitive rider then theres nothing wrong with 3 x 9..a lot of people spend a heap of time in their 22/24 and no matter what size dinner plate you put on the back they will always like to have a granny ring.
Bear with me, I am restrained by political correctness here and it hamstrings the normal smooth articulation of my opinions !!
Its like part timers on single rings..unless you intend to be a savage for the entire year , a single ring is for savages only. Bear in mind my scientific findings on this are as a result of observing struggling riders in the wild not sitting at a desk extrapolating data from a magazine or a bike nerd site..

The reason I was asking was I need to replace my cranks currently 3x9 and there is no difference price wise with swapping them out for 3x10. So if I could swap out the front for 10 speed now I could upgrade the rest down the line and and when it breaks etc.
For me there would be no real advantage in using a double ring over triple up front (despite my best efforts not to use granny ring). Your findings aside all the evidence would say that the rear mechs with clutches are very good and offer real advantages with few drawbacks. I'd like to be able to take advantage of this down the line but they aren't available in 9 speed format.
ah yes the shimano clutch system ..did i turn it on or off before i hit the descent ? wait I think I left it off thats why i didn't win that last Enduro stage..oh wait , maybe I'll switch it on the next bit is bumpy..yes..there it goes ripped off on my second spin..will I replace it with a clutch fitted one..I do not know..I have survived for countless decades on bikes that do no have this clutch system..how did I ever cope ?
on a seroius note.. i used an XT Clutched mech for a while , never saw the slightest bit of difference in it..however..I am now running an xt mech made up from 3 broken rear mechs and I can't tell the difference ..I have a very excellent Workshop Manager..the moral of the story is..People ride Bikes..bikes do not ride us..improve the people and you can't lose !
I did however hear similar calls of it's a gimmick to 10 speed drive trains, Dropper Seat posts, 29 ers (or Two Niners as the cool kids call them) in recent years now all those things are standard on loads of bikes and considered by most huge improvements on what has come before them.
I'm sure there are countless people here who can remember similar calls gimmickry when 9 speed drives appeared and no doubt others who laughed at the idea of full suspension.
I've never ridden a bike with a clutch on the rear mech but the science behind it adds up in my limited understanding of engineering so I'll no write it off just yet. I very much doubt will it will improve my riding one single bit but if it delivers what it says it will that can only be a good thing. And most likely we can look back at it in a few years time an laugh why we even questioned if they were any use or not.
The person riding the bike will always be the biggest factor, sure most likely if you put Robin or his like on a fully ridged single speed he would still wipe the floor with most.
Mountainbiking is magic..Engineering is just scribbles on some graph paper by people too unimaginative to colour outside the lines..you are talking to a man who was there when SPDs were laughed at and Shock absorbers on a bike were a hilarious idea..but they are fierce inventions..driven by magicians like me..Engineers are and always will be the sidekicks..the riders dream up these things and engineers go mad in there basements drawing them in to reality..but this Clutch thing..its a cod..you have to stop, get off your bike and switch it on..what kind of MTBer stops riding to fiddle with his bike..who has time for that barbarism !
