I've changed my brake pads, some fluid came out, brakes don't work, bike shop closed.
Can I use regular old dot 3 or dot 4 brake fluid or do I need bicycle specific fluid?
it depends on your brakes. Shimano and Magura use mineral oil the rest use dot 4
Shimano Deore, not xt. Off a 2004 bike. I don't want to put in something that erodes the seals, but if dot 4 gets me out tomorrow i'll get some mineral oil during the week.
It does say mineral oil on the reservoir now that I've looked at it again.
Don't use DOT fluid in a Shimano brake - it'll destoy the seals. Mineral oil only. However, if you really have to get out tomorrow, some melted butter would be an adequate substitute.
Cheers lads. It looks like I'll be waiting til halfords open at 11 before heading out, better that than having to redo piston seals,
or as a proper temporary fix a bit of baby oil will do the trick. Keep the dot 4 well away from it.

yeah it will get you out of a hole and not ruin your seals and leave your hands nice and soft.
Don't forget scented, how I explain this to the war office is another matter.
