I suspect I'll be abused for this this but can you run any make of rotor with any make of caliper? I need to replace a Hayes rotor and have a shimano handy.

If it is the same size it shouldn't be a problem
Not a problem as long as they are the same diameter and the braking surface depth is the same you'll be grand.. you'll know straight away as soon as you put it all together..
I've been using a Juicy 7 on a Deore rotor with no problems.. same size disc, same surface depth..
Hope, Formula, XT & XTR all have narrower braking depths on their discs compared to Avids, Hayes and the likes..

I'm using Hope rotors on Avid brakes with no problems. Well, no problems that I've noticed. They may well explode in a ball of flame any moment.

Braking depth is the shiney bit on the rotor.. the pad contact surface..
You can still use either if the diameter is the same but if the braking depth (pad contact surface) is narrower then your brakes will not work as well as they should...
Spot the difference... one is narrower than the other..
