About time too Marc. I have a UST on the front and a Stans on the back, I was curious to see if one was more dependable that the other. Both have proved faultless, no punctures ever, nothing between them. So if cost is an issue then its hard to argue against the Stans, you donât even have to run UST tyres if you want to save weight, just put in loads of goo and watch as it seals the porous tyre over a spin or two, unnerving but it works. Setting them up can be a pain and some tyre/rim combinations work better than others, but you should only have to do it once, and just make sure you have a good track pump, Co2 or go to a garage for an air line.
You will be amazed at how compliant they are and how much the better the trails are on lower pressures, climbing and descending, and no more pinging off rocks. Do it, do it!
Ghetto all the way. I haven't used Stans but I've heard it doesn't create as strong a seal as ghetto. 2 years with ghetto on a couple of bikes with no problems at all.
I have a ghetto question..
I was looking at Ghettoing my Free ride machine wheels but the rims are very wide and the seal wouldn't take ..
any ideas..
Stans wouldn't work for me on a normal XC wheel ! So what Steve says is spot on..
Al is setting up Ghetto tubeless with normal/cheaper tyres, tub rim tape and BMX presta valve tubes. Allegedly.....DH tyres on XC rims are the future....allegedly.
I've UST on the full suss and ghetto on the hard-tail both with Hutchinson Toro tyres and set up courtesy of Al, Bike Rack. I havn't had a puncture since I started - which considering my weight and usually less than ideal line choices can't be bad!
The valves annoy me a little on the ghetto and when I ran Intense System 1 tyres (non UST) they had to be pumped before every ride!
I run stans on the dh bike and ghetto on the trail bike. I've found that if you change your tyres a lot the stans are a better system but both seal equally well. I have my own garage/air line and i've found the best way to seat on wide rims is to remove valve core. Shut off air supply at compressor. Remove gauge (the bit at the end of the air line that you squeeze to put air in). You will now be left with just the bare hose. Push this onto the valve and release a quick blast of air into the tyre by turning the air on and off really quickly with the handle on the compressor. WARNING! This is tricky and if you let in too much air your gonna end up with a burst tyre and a red face. When you've seated remove the air line and fit valve core. For me this has never failed but as i've said is tricky enough. hope this helps. mick.
Cheers lads, all ghettoed up, reasonably simple to set up, had to go to the garage for air, track pump wasn't happening. Cost me less than 30 euro all in, ghetto tubeless is recession tubeless...
