Im heading away soon to a big adventure race in America (www.ecoprimalquest.com). The MTBing in it is gonna be very long, and will apparently go trhough areas with a lot of cactus like plants with lots of nasty spiky things. The race organisers are recommending to go tubeless and to be as puncture resiliant as possible. So what do you guys reckon are the toughest and most resiliant UST tyres? I don't really know what the terraine is like, but I'm guessing it be more dusty than muddy, so grip isn't such a big consideration in comparison to toughness and survivability. I have very little experience with tubeless tyres, so I don't really know which has the best reputation. Preferably something that can be bought in a local bike shop (Don't have time to be messing about with internerd ordering).
Also, for tubeless, is copydex solution really as good as the more expensive purpose made goo stuff? Where the hell does one buy copydex?
I'd say you can't go wrong with any of the Maxxis Tubeless tyres...I know everal people had trouble with Michelin tyrewalls ,etc..but who the feck here rides in dry places ....
You can get copydex in Woodies..don't bother with the " Sealant" nonsense..copydex never fails to do the job .
Maxxis all the way, if the terrain is as hardcore as you say I would go for Maxxis high roller DH tyres, heavy but very robust, whack in loads of goo and you will be unstoppable.
Maxxis high roller DH tyres = very heavy and roll like bricks. Even the all mountain ones roll ****e. The tyre to have if you are only worried about the downhill bits. Not the tyre to draft a few 100 km's across a desert.
If thorns etc are the problem, then loads of goo is the answer.
If I was a smart person I would find the local forum for the area and see what they are using. You might even pick up tyres out there. Anything you get over the shelf in this country isn't going to be ideally suited to where your going. Unless its one of those shops that stock mad things, like desert typres and stuff.
don't bother with that Copydex ****e, I used it before - it's useless, buy the Stan's or Joe's proper sealant
I've used Maxxis Crossmark UST's for well over a year with no punctures (or maybe they punctured but the sealant sorted them)
Maybe the DH High Rollers are overkill, but even normal High Rollers are pretty immune to punctures, I ran them puncture free for 3 years, compare that to brief foray into Panaracers, 3 punctures on one spin.
and another thing about that Sealant stuff..not only does it make you sterile, impotile and generally slow on spins..it turns into a mouse inside youtrtyre
Also, donât go mad with big fat tyres. The conventional wisdom is that the bigger the tyre the less likely to puncture, that makes sense if pinch flats are whatâs causing the punctures. If its thorns then the bigger the tyre the more surface area you are covering and the more thorns you are going to roll over. Plus rolling resistance is really important for what your at, and big feck of tyres will make life a whole lot harder.
If it was me I would probably get a low profile skinny tyre (2â at most) at the heavier end of the scale, fill it with goo and pump it up like a bullet.
Maxis Larsens and Racharos look like they fit the bill. Also Continental* and Specialised* tyres, they to be good for this kind of stuff.
* Attention miscellaneous Muppets, donât go out and buy these, they are ****e, but they are made out of thick rubber and roll well and where developed in deserts. So they may work out well for Mr Enduro. The rest of you stick with what you have.
that rolling resistance blather is a myth like all tyre realted Voodoo..none of that ever existed before the invention of the internet forum....mark my words..I'm right about this !!!
With the invention of the internet forum people have lost the ability to actually go out and ride their bikes.
Oh they think they go out riding their bikes..3 times a week on your bike is an insult to the mountainbike devils..
you have to be out at least every day except Mondays..thats bath day !!
But all this CX nonsense and 29er drivel and Goo versus copydex..its all a ruse just to get you to buy American ..and you know what happens when you buy American..some Chinese guy gets rich...
Did you know the Chinese invented the Rubber tyre..and gunpowder..and tights..
and now look at them,
