Headset bearings

I think I need new headset bearings, as there's play in the headset on the 6" bike but it's properly tightened etc..
the current bearings are the ball and race type, but I looked on CRC and they only have cartridge type - can you use cartridge bearings in a ball and race set-up?
or will I have the source the correct size ball and race bearings somewhere?

Halfords normally stock a selection of cheap and cheerful ball and race sets for headsets...

No dude cups are different.Go for hope,race face,chris king which seal really well and last.Or cheap BBB cartridge are ok and replacment bearings easy available.

Play tends to indicate some other problem. grinding is normally the sign of worn bearings.
eg. If it feel tight, and developes play over a spin, then it is the frame headtube that needs facing.

could be the fork........................

possibly the star nut creeping up the steertube. Changing the bearings will do feck all if its play only if its sticky our feeling rough.
